To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MANUEL F. SALMINI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Refrigerator- Drains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to refrigerator drains and the object of the invention is the provision of a durable and efficient drain which'may be readily mounted under or near a refrigerator and connected to the main drain pipe without tearing up a large portion of the fioor which is necessary with the present type of sheet lead drains commonly used.
A further object of the invention is the provision of novel means for connecting the drain to the main drain pipe and for forming a water seal therein which prevents the rising of foul odors.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a novel device which acts to form a combined strainer and water seal in the drain.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation with the support partly in section. Fig. 2 is a top plan View. Fig. 3 is a vertical section.
Referring more particularly to the drawing 1 represents the drain which is preferably cast of a single sheet of metal having inwardly tapering sides 2 and a pocket or trap 3 formed in the center thereof with an opening 4 extending through the center. The edges of the sides are provided with depending aprons 5 which rest upon the floor and inclose the central depending boss 6 in which the trap 3 is formed. The opening 4 is internally threaded as shown at 7 to receive a bracing nipple 8 which projects upwardly into the trap 3 and is provided with a beveled upper edge 9. The main drain pipe passes through the floor 10 of the refrigerator and is provided with a continuous thread for about two inches from the upper end upon which is threaded a lock nut 11 seated in a recess 12 having rectangular walls to fit the nut so as to prevent the same from turning. The upper end of the main drain pipe has threaded thereon a soft metal washer 13 which seats against the beveled edges 9 of the nipple 8 and a lock nut 14 is screwed upon the top of the washer so as to bring the same into tight engagement with the nipple and thereby form a water-tight oint.
Projecting into the recess and adjoining the sides 2 are apertured and tapped lugs 15 upon which the combined strainer and wa ter seal cap 16 is adapted to rest. This cap is provided with a laterally extending flange 17, a portion of which rests upon the lugs 15 and is apertured to receive attaching screws 18 to secure the cap in position .and prevent accidental removal. The flange 17 is notched all the way around so as to permit the passage of water to the trap 3 and so as to provide a strainer which will prevent the passage of large articles accumulated to stop up the main drain pipe. Depending from the cap is a circular flange 19 which enters the trap and surrounds the nipple 8 and its lower edge is provided with a plurality of notches 20 also acting as a strainer. This cap forms a complete water seal and prevents all foul odors from rising through the pipe into the refrigerator.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- In a drain, a casting having inwardly tapering sides, a hollow boss depending from the conjunction of said sides and having an aperture passing therethrough and a recess surrounding the aperture, a nipple threaded into said aperture and extending into the boss, a lock nut seated in the recess, a main drain pipe threaded into the lock nut and passing through the nipple into the boss, means carried by the main drain pipe and acting in conjunction with the lock nut to form a water-tight joint between the nipple and the drain pipe, an inverted cup-shaped member mounted over the boss and having a vertically notched flange adapted to surround the nipple to act in conjunction therewith and form a water seal.
