SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,134, dated November 19, 1895.

To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that l, FRANK A. RADCLIFFE, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washbasins; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same'.
My invention relates to improvements in washbasins, and particularly to the stopperseatbearing outlet of the basin, the object being to simplify and improve the construction of said outlet.
With this object in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel is a central vertical section of a portion of a washbasin provided with my improved outlet. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2, Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the washbasin, that centrally of its bottom is provided with a vertical hole a, engaged by the vertical stopper-seat-bearing tube B, that at its upper end terminates in an external annular iiange b, that rests upon the inner surface ofthe bottom of the basin around hole a.
Tube B is preferably stamped from a single piece of sheet metal and extends downwardly through and a suitable distance below hole a. Tube B, immediately below its external flange b, has a plain portion b', whose internal diameter gradually decreases downwardly and forms a seat for the tapering stopper C of the basin. Tube B, between its lower extremity and the plain portion b', has screw-threads b2.
The tubular member D, to which the drainpipe E of the basin or trap connected with the drain-pipe is soldered or secured in any approved manner, is preferably stamped from a single piece of sheet metal and is screwthreaded internally at its upper end, as at D, which threaded portion of member D engages the externally-threaded portion of member B. Tube D at its upper extremity is provided with an external lannular iiange CZ, that engages the under side of the basin when the parts are properly assembled.- Member B, immediately below its plain portion b', is shown provided with two holes b3, that register with the overflow passage-way G of the basin. Passage-way G at its upper end communicates with the overflow-holes A', provided in the usual manner in the upper portion of the basin.
The lower walls of holes b3 form a seat for a removable disk H, that is provided with any suitable number of vertical perforations h. Disk H is consequently located at the bottom of the discharging end of overflow passage-way G and forms a strainer for preventing the passage of obstructing matter from the basin either through hole A or overflow passage-way G into the drain-pipe. Disk H is suitably recessed at its edge (see Fig. 2) to form two shoulders H', adjacent to each dividing-wall b4 between holes b3, which two shoulders'snugly engage opposite edges, respectively, of the lower end of said wall, which edges diverge upwardlysomewhat, (see Fig. 1,) and thereby form a stop to prevent raising or vertical displacement of strainer H. Disk H is of course made of flexible but lstiff sheet metal, so it can readily be inserted and pressed into place.
By the construction hereinbefore described it will be observed that my improved outlet for washbasins comprises buty two piecesnamely, members B and D-in addition to the strainer removably seated in the upper member B, as hereinbefore indicated.

The combination with a wash-basin having its bottom provided with ka vertical hole a, of the upright tube B extending through and a suitable distance below said hole in the basin, said tube, at its upper end, being provided with an external flange resting upon the bottom of the basin and being provided with a seat for a stopper, and the lower portion of said tube being screw-threaded, a strainer H within and removably supported from said tube, suitable means for preventing displacement of the strainer within said tube, and the tubular member D having its upper portion screw threaded and engaging the threaded portion of the stopper-receiving tube and said tubular member D extending a suitable distance below the lower extremity of the stopper-receiving tube and being provided,
at its upper extremity, with an external annular flange fitted against the under surface IOO of the basin, substantially as shown, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with a wash-basin A whose bottoni is provided with a vertical hole a, and overflow passage-way G conneeted with said hole and in open relation with the upper end of the chamber of the basin, of the tube B extending downwardly through the aforesaid hole and being externally screw-threaded at its lower end, said tube, at its upper end, being provided with an external flange and with a seat for a stopper, and being also pro vided with two lateral holes registering with the overiiow passageway, strainer Il seated upon the lower walls of said lateral holes, means for preventing upward displacement oi' the strainer, and the tube D having its upper portion screw-threaded internally and engaging the lower threaded 'portion of the upper tube, said tube D, at its upper end, being provided with an external flange fl, substantially as shown, for the purpose specified.
