INVENTOB fida/fldm/d WITNESSES [KIM/e1" A TTORNE Y8 'nnrrnn snares rarrnnir orrrren.
ADOLF EDWARD MUELLER, 0F LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
ADJUSTABLE OVEBFLOW ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLF EDWARD MUELLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Overflow Attachment, of which the following is a full,.clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an attachment for overflow structures and has for an objeot the provision of an improved construction adapted for bath tubs, wash basins, and the like, whereby any desired height of water may be secured within certain limits.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment for an overflow pipe which has an opening and which is rotatable whereby the opening may be positioned at different heights for securing any desired water level.
A still further object of the invention, more specifically, is the provision of an attachment adapted to fit over the usual waste pipe or overflow opening of the bath tub or wash basin and formed with an opening held by a clamping member in any adjusted position, so that the position of the opening will determine the water level regardless of the position of the waste pipe opening.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of one end of a bath tub showing an embodiment of the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a section through Fig. 1 on line 22.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the overflow attachment shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4c is a section through Fig. 3 on line 4 1.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing a slightly modified form of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a bath tub of any desired kind provided with a waste-pipe 2, elbow 3 and a strainer 4: covering the spider 5 integral with the elbow 3. This construction is the usual overflow construction for bath tubs and also for wash basins and the like. Usually there is a screw or other member connected centrally in the strainer a to which the stopper chain is secured. In the present instance instead of having the structure just mentioned, a

to firmly clamp the strainer 1 in position while a casing or hood 8 surrounds the re Patented Apr. 1918.
duced-parts 9 of shaft 6 and rests on the washer 9 and on-said reduced part. A hollow boss 10 extends from the outer wall 11 of'the hood 8 toward the nut or sleeve 7 and contains a spring 12 acting against a flange 13 and against the washer 9, for
maintaining the parts in proper position and the edge 14 in contact with the flange 15' of strainer t. B y tightening up the nut 16 on the threaded end 17 more or less tension nected by transverse sections 21 and 22 1 whereb an entrance mouth or assa 'ewa is provided which may be positioned at the,
highest point of the device, as shown in Fig. 1, or at a lower point, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. By this construction and arrangement the water level may be raised from the line 22 (Fig. 1) to line 23, or to any intermediate point.
In some instances where the valves and overflow are diflerently arranged from the showing in Fig. 1, a slightly modified structure is provided in which the casing 8 is provided with an are shaped tubular member 2a of any desired length. When this form of the invention is used the tubular member 24 is comparatively long so as to extend to near the top of the tub and thereby allow a large quantity of water to be used if desired. An adjustment of either of the devices will allow the use of the minimum amount of water provided by the overflow, or a larger amount as preferred, so as to cover the body more or less when bathing, or for use for other purposes.
What I claim is:
1. In an overflow attachment for tubs, basins, and the like, a hood adapted to fit over the overflow opening, a retaining member for rotatably supporting said hood, and resilient means for holding said hood in an adjusted position.
2. An overflow attachment for the overflow opening of tubs, basins, and the like, comprising a hood adapted to fit over said opening, said hood being formed with an opening in one side, means for rotatably supporting said hood so that said hood may be positioned at any height for varying the height of the water line, and resilient means acting on the hood for producing friction between the hood and the tub whereby the hood is held in any adjusted position.
3. An overflow attachment comprising a hood formed with an open face on one side,
an opening on one edge, said last mentioned opening being formed of upwardly extending flanges, and means for clamping the open side of said hood against the tub over the waste discharge opening said clamping means being formed to permit a rotary movement of the hood so that the secondmentioned opening may be positioned at any desired height for varying the water line in the tub.
. sure.
5. An overflow attachment for tubs and the like comprising a hood adapted to fit over the waste outlet of the tub, said hood being formed with a tubular portion extending an appreciable distance from the main body of the hood at an angle thereto, and means for rotatably clamping said hood in different positions, whereby the opening in the end oi said tubular extension may be arranged at different levels.
