FAUCET.
To all whom 2'15 may concern.
Be it known that I, IVALTER lVILooX, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to faucets, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation, and which is designed particularly for use as a water faucet, and which will remain indefinitely in operative condition and not frequently need repair, and with this object in view, the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my invention are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional side view of my improved faucet, and showing the same connected with a slab or table such as is usually employed in connection with wash basins, wash tubs, bath tubs, sinks and the like Fig. 2 a transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1 ;Fig. 3 a detail side view of parts of the construction shown in Fig. 1 ;-Fig. 4 a detail side view of the top port-ion of the faucet tube shown in Fig. 1;Fig. 5 a top plan view of a washer which I employ, and which is shown in section in Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 a bottom plan view of a nut which forms a part of my improved faucet and which is shown in use in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at a a table, slab or the like, such as is usually employed in connection with a wash basin, bath tub, sink or similar device, and said table or slab may be placed either in a horizontal or in a vertical position.
In the practise of my invention, I provide a faucet tube 1) one end of which is screw threaded, as shown at 6 and adapted to be passed through the slab or table a and to form a connection for a water supply pipe, in the usual manner. a is angular in cross section, as shown at 6 to prevent its rotation in said slab or table, and said tube Z) is provided with a flange or rim 6 which bears 011 said slab or table and below or inwardly of said slab or table, the threaded part Z2 of the tube Z) is provided with a nut b and washer 6 whereby the tube 6 may be securely bound in, and held in the slab or table a. The tube 7), at a predetermined point above the flange or rim 6*, is provided with a part b which is angular in cross section, and preferably square, and on which is secured a nut c the bottom of which is provided at one side with a lug 0 and the part b of the tube Z) above the part b is re duced in size, as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4.
Loosely mounted on and vertically movable in the tube b above the flange or rim 6 is a cap (Z the body part of which is provided with a nut-shaped portion (Z2 and an interior thread (Z and placed in the bottom of said cap is a packing (Z on which is placed a lock washer 6, shown detached in Fig. 5, and the top of said lock washer is provided with a lug c and adjacent to the central opening 6 therein with an arc-shaped groove 6 adapted to receive the lug 0 of the nut c, and which is approximately ninety degrees or one-fourth of a circle in length.
The top part Z2 of the tube 1) is inclosed by a sleeve f provided at one side with a projecting coupling f with which a discharge nozzle f is connected, or said coupling f and nozzle may be formed integrally, and one end of the sleeve f is provided with an interior thread which corresponds with the thread on the nut 0, onto which the sleeve f is screwed, and the other end of the sleeve f is closed by a threaded plug 9 to the bottom of which is secured a valve washer h preferably composed of fibrous material, and which is partially countersunk in said plug and secured thereto by a screw 7L2.
In assembling the parts of the faucet, the cap (Z with the packing CF and the lock washer e therein is first passed on over the tube Z) after which the sleeve f with the plug 9 in' position, is screwed down onto the nut c, after which the cap d is screwed onto the lower end of said sleeve. The lower end of the sleeve f is also provided with a recess f adapted to receive the lug e on the lock washer e, and in the above operation the lock Washer e bears 011 the packing d and moves upwardly with the cap 03 until the lug e enters the recess 7 in the bottom of the sleeve 7, when the lock washer will cease to turn with the cap, and the further turning of the cap will force said lock washer into close contact with the bottom of the sleeve 7 and compress the packing d in the bottom of said cap. The device now, is ready for use, and with the construction shown, if the nozzle f be turned to the right through a quarter of a circle, the sleeve f, cap d and lock washer 6 will all be moved upwardly, and the lug c on the bottom of the nut 0 will enter the groove 6 in the lock washer and stop the rotation of the sleeve 7 and nozzle f and this operation as will be understood, raises the valve washer it and opens the end 6 of the tube 6 and water will flow out through the nozzle f The reverse movement of the sleeve f and nozzle f will force the above named parts back into the position shown in Fig. l, and the valve washer It will press on the upper end of the part b of the tube Z) and limit the movement of said sleeve and nozzle and also close said tube.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the nozzle 7 and sleeve f are ca pable' of rotary movement, with the construction shown, to the extent of approximately ninety degrees in either direction, and that one of these movements is limited by the lug 0 operating in the groove 6 and the other by the valve washer it pressing on the tube 6 or the end 6 thereof, and that the first of said movements opens the faucet while the last closes it.
My invention is not restricted to the limiting of the movements of the discharge nozzle f to a quarter of a circle as herein described, and this movement, as will be understood, may be increased or decreased by lengthening or shortening the groove 6 in the washer e, and other changes in and modifications of the construction shown and described may be made, within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages. It will also be understood that the nut 0 must be rigidly secured on the part b of the tube 6, and this may be done by swaging or sweating, or in any other way, and one of the chief features of my improvement consists in locating the valve or valve washer 7t in the top of the sleeve 1 instead of in the bottom thereof, and connecting the same with the closure device or plug g whereby a new valve washer may be substituted for the old whenever desirable by simply detaching or removing said closure device or plug.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a device of the class described, a faucet tube provided with a nut which is rigidly secured thereto and a reduced extension, a cap movable on said tube and provided with a packing and a lock washer which bears on said packing, a rotatable nozzle sleeve screwed onto said nut and onto one end of which said cap is screwed so as to force said lock washer into engagement with the said end of the sleeve, means whereby the lock washer and the sleeve are locked together, and means whereby said nut will engage said lock washer when the sleeve is turned in one direction, the other end of said sleeve being provided with a closure device having a valve washer adapted to bear on the reduced extension of the faucet tube.
