P. GONNOLLY. Stop Cooks and Boxes for Water Pipes.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PATRICK OONNOLLY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOP-COCKS AND BOXES FOR WATER-PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 201,996, dated April 2, 1878; application filed January 9, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK CoNNoLLv, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stop-(locks and Boxes for Water-Pipes; and that the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a full, clear,'and accurate description of the same.
My invention covers a metallic check-washer and other parts hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my improvement. Fig.2 is a cross-section in the line w m. Fig. 3 is a crosssection in the line 3 y.
My improvement is made as follows: Instead of the wooden box now commonly used, I use a metallic pipe, E, provided with a screw-thread at its upper and lower ends. The screw-thread at the lower end of the pipe E screws into a corresponding screw-thread on the inner surface of the part B of the stopcock A, which part B projects vertically from stopcock A. Within said part B, which is either cast of the same piece with stop-cock A or separately, and then secured to said stop-cock in any suitable manner, is the key 0, which turns the water on or 05 from the main pipe, as desired.
Fitting into a cavity or hole, 61, in the key 0 is the rod D, which runs up to the upper end of the pipe E and turns the key 0.
G is a metallic washer or check, so arranged with reference to the pipe E that, if it is desired to turn the. water on, or vice versa, the check G will only allow the rod D to move in the right direction to turn the water on or off.
The check Gr also closes tightly over the space between the' rod D and pipe E, and thus prevents any dirt or water entering the pipe and interfering with the action of the rod D.
F is a cap, which screws onto the screwthread at the upper part of pipe E and closes it. a is a valve or opening in the stop-cock A, through which the water passes from the main pipe, and which is open and shut by the action of the key 0 when turned by the rod 1).
Instead of having a screw-thread cut on the inner surface of the part B of stop-cock A, the screw-thread may be cut on the outer surface of part B and a corresponding screwthread out on the inner surface of the lower 1 end of pipe E, the lower end of said pipe being enlarged, so as to screw into and fit over the screw thread on the outer surface of the said part B of stop-cock A.
When. it is desired to operate my improvement, unscrew the cap F and take it oil the pipe E, turn the rod D, which, by check G, is made to turn only in the right direction. The movement of the rod D turns the key 0, and turns on the water or turns it oil, as desired.
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The metallic check-washer G, having the stud f on its circumference, in combinationwith the pipe E, having a recess in its upper end, rod D, key 0, and stop-cock A, as herein specified.
PATRICK GONNOLLY. In presence of- CHARLES G. 00E, LoUIs W. FROST.
