ADJUSTABLE CULTIVATOR-PLOW STANDARD. 7
To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, JAMES B. WVRIG T, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glory, in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and use- I fill Improvements in Ad ustable Cult1vator-' Plow Standards, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to a new and useful adjustable cultivator plow standard, and its object is to provide a cultivator plow stand ard that will be correlated with a device mounted upon the beams supporting said standard, which device will serve tohold the standard secure in various positions of vertical adjustment. I
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described that will be strong, durable, efficient and simple and comparatively; inexpensive to produce, also one in which the several parts will not be likely to get out of working order.
With the above and other objects in view,
the invention has relation to certain novel features of construction and operation, an example of which is described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 isa plan View of a cultivator beam supporting a plow standard and cor-- related with my novel adjusting device. Fig. 2 is a View of the same in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken upon the line w-w of Fig. 1. Fig. 1- is a cross sectional view taken upon the line yy of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate similar parts in all the figures,
the numeral 1 denotes a cultivator beam provided with a rectangular aperture 2 through which is vertically passed a plow standard 3, carrying upon its lower end the usual shovel plow 3 Upon one face of the standard 3, there is provided a rack of'horizontal teeth 4.
Upon the beam 1, there is mounted a sliding pawl 5, having one of its extremities provided with teeth which one llmiting position of sliding displacement of the pawl will have engagement with the rack 4. The
pawl is held in its proper position upon the beam 1 by a pair of cap-screws 6, one of which is passed through one extremity of an elongated aperture 7 centrally formed in Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 16, 1914. Serial No; 824,940.
the pawl, and the other is passed through a 7 slot 8 extending toward the standard 3 from the other extremity of the aperture 7.
A coiled spring 9 disposed within the aperture 7 abuts at one extremityagainst a metal block 10, which is contiguous with the capescrew 6 farthest removed from the standard 3 and hence can be subjected to no displacement by said spring. The other extremity of the spring abuts against thatend wall of the aperture 7 in which the slot 8 is formed and exerts upon the pawl a pressure tending to maintain the pawl firmly engagedwith the rack 4. Displacement of the spring 9'upwardly out of the aperture 7 is prevented by a plate 11 which is loosely held upon the pawl by the two cap-screws 6.
A convenient device for manually disen gaging the pawl from the standardis pro- 1vided,said device comprising a lever 12 pivoted upon the beam 1 adjacent to-the pawl,
and having a protuberance 13 formed upon its pivotedend which through engagement with a shoulder 14 formed upon the pawl is adapted to displace the pawl from the standard 3 when said lever is subjected to a slight counter-clock-wise rotation such as to displace it from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 to that indicated in dash lines in the same figure.
The movement of the pawl from the standard 3 is limited by the cap-screw 6 which passes through the slot 8, the end Wall of said slot coming into contact with said cap-screw as soon as the'pawl has undergone a sufficient displacement to completely disengage its teeth from those of the standard.
It is preferred to form upon the toothed end of the pawl a pair of tongues 15 which will engage at each side of the standard, assisting in maintaining a snug engagement between the pawl teeth and the teeth of the rack 1 in one position of the pawl and guiding the pawl in its displacement to its other position.
In the use of a cultivator equipped with the above described novel means for adjusting the shovel standard, it is apparent that the operator may adjust his plow shovels in many different positions of vertical displacement merely by swinging the lever 12 through'a slight are, shifting the correlated standard to the desired position of elevation, and then releasing the lever 12 and allowing the pawl 5 to engage the standard Patented Dec. 15,1914.
due to the force of the spring 9. Since in the present practice, the use of a wrench and the expenditure of considerable time and 1abor is required to adjust the plow standard vertically, it is believed the above described device will eliminate considerable trouble and loss of time.
The invention is presented as including all such changes and modifications as properly come within the scope of the following claims. 1
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a vertically slidablev plow shovel standard, formed with a rack or horizontal teeth, of a spring-pressed pawl having a toothed end normally engaging said'rack, and formed upon one side with a shoulder, and a lever pivoted adjacent to said pawl, having a protuberance formed upon its pivoted end engaging with said shoulder, a certain angular displacement of the lever serving to disengage the pawl from the standard.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a vertically slidable plow shovel standard, formed with a rack of horizontal teeth, of a centrally apertured pawl having a toothed'end, a s'pring'disposed within the central aperture of the pawl and maintaining the toothed end of ably mounted upon the beam having a toothed end normally engaging the rack of the standard, said pawl being centrally apertured and being formed with a shoulder upon one side, a spring mounted in the central aperture of the plow maintaining the same normally engaged with the rack of thestandard, and a lever pivoted upon the a beam adjacent to the pawl, formed with a protuberance engaging the shoulder of the pawl, a certain angular displacement of said lever serving to disengage the teeth of the pawl from those of the rack.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribmg wltnesses.
JAMES B. R1 GHT.
