UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFIGEQ g JOHN M. DOYLE, OF NORTH SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND JAMES R. MGOABE, OF SAME PLACE.
BENCH-DOG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,894, dated October 4, 1881.
Applicationfiled May 5, 1881. (Model) T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1. JOHN M. DOYLE, of North Springfield, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Bench-Dog, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact "description.
The objectof my invention is the production of a movable and adjustable bench-dog for earpenters use; and it consists of a notched sliding rack-bar or claw and a pivoted toothed lever secured in an angle-frame, which frame is adapted to be attached to the bench by means of a lateral bolt or arm entering holes in the side of the bench, as herein-alter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the sit me.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the angle-frame, the arm a of which is preferably diagonal in the transverse vertical plane to the arm Ct of the frame, and the arm a is provided at or near its lower end with the horizontal bolt or arm d, which is adapted to enter holes in the side of the bench, as shown in dotted lines, for attaching the device to the bench. The end of the arm a of frame is chambered or slotted out, as shown at c, in which slot the notched plate I) moves, and the lever E is pivoted in this slot in such relation to the plate D that the cogs e of the lever engage with the projections g of the plate.
The lever E is provided with the pawl F,
' which engages with the notches it formed in the rounded head of the arm a of the angleframe, by which means the lever is locked to hold the plate I) firmly against the end of the hoard or plank desired to be held upon the bench, and by raising the pawl the plate can be withdrawn from engagement with the end of the plank by the lever, thus quickly and easily releasing the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' l The angleframe provided with the arm or bolt (1, in combination with the sliding plate D and pivoted lever E, suhstantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The angle-frame A, the arm a of which is diagonal to the arm 0, thereof, and provided with the boltor arm d, in combination with the sliding plate D and lever E, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. Thebench-dogherein shown anddescribed, consistingottheangle-frameA,thearmathereof being provided with the bolt or arm (I, and thearm a being formed with the notches h, in combination with the sliding plate D, lever E, and pawl F, substantially as and for the pur poses specified.
