Description

G. A. PRESCOTT & J. BABSALOUX.
Head-Blocks for Saw-Mills.
No, 144,866. Patented Nov.25,1873.
WHNEssEs. Q INVENIURE.
v a? t w an.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVUS A. PRESCOTT AND JOSEPH BARSALOUX, OF SANDY HILL, NEW YORK SAID BARSALOUX ASSIGNO R TO SAID PRESCOTT.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEAD-BLOCKS FOR SAW-MILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,866, dated November 25,1873; application filed January 30, 1873.
' dogs to cotton-presses, lifting-jacks, and other machines; and consists in a sliding head, moving on a rack-bar, and driven by a double ratchet, as will hereafter be more fully set forth.
The accompanying drawing represents a side elevation of our invention.
a represents aratchet-bar, upon which slides the head b, the two parts being secured together in such a manner that the head can move freely back and forth, but cannot be lifted vertically. Extending back from the head is the projection c, to which the bifurcated lever 01 is pivoted, carrying the two ratchets e i. The ratchet e is pivoted to the extreme front end of the lever, while the other is pivoted a suitable distance in the rear of it. When the lever is raised upward, the front ratchet is made to catch and move the head forward, while at the same time the rear ratchet moves forward to take a new hold. When the lever is depressed, the reverse action takes place.
When this device is applied as a motor power to any other machines than to mill-dogs, the head will be square, or any other shape that may be desired. When used for driving mill-dogs, the head will be cut away so as to form a wedge, as is fully shown in the drawings, so that it can be forced under the dog and force it into the log. When the lever is lowered until it is parallel with the ratchet bar, it locks the head in position, so that it cannot be forced backward until the lever is raised.
We are aware of the patent to H. H. Gridley, August 30, 1870, and disclaim the device there shown.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the rack a, head I), pawls e 2', and bifurcated lever d, the lever being so constructed as to lock the head in position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we hereunto affix our signatures this 25th day of January, 1873.
GUSTAVUS A. PRESCOTT. JOSEPH BARSALOUX.
