Letters Patent No. 112,053, dated February 21, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING-BEDSTEADS. A
The Schedule referredl to in these Letters Patent: and making part of the same.
reference being had to the arcompanying.drawing forming part of this specification, 'in which drawing-,-
Figure l represents a sideview of this invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse. section of the same, the line x x, iig. l, indicating the plan o'f section.
Similar letters indicate-corresponding parts.
This invention relates to; a bedstead, the side rails of which are connected to the foot and head-pieces by pivots, while said foot and head-pieces are provided with toes, on which the side rails rest when the bedstead is unfolded, and which are locked to said side rails by means of sleeves capable bf catching over the toes and side rails in such a manner that, when the bedstead is unfolded,` and the sleeves are made to catch under the toes, the wholepdevice is rendered firm and durable, and when the sleeves are pushed back so as to release the toes of the foot and head-pieces, thc bedstead can be folded up in a comparatively small compass.-
1n the drawing- The letter A designates the side rails of a bedstead, which-are made in sections, being connected at their inner ends by means of pivots a to legs B, while their outer ends are secured by pivots b, one to the headpiece C', and the other to the foot-piece C of the bedstead, so that the bedstead can be` folded or unfolded, as may be desired.
From the head and foot-pieces C C project toes, c,
as shown in g. l of the drawing, and over the side rails are iitted sleeves @which are large enough to catchvover said toes.
f When the bedstead is unfolded to the position shown in iig. l the toes ccatch up against theside rails and form stops, preventing the head and footpieces i'om being swung out beyond thedesired position. By sliding the sleeves d over the toes, the head and lfoot-pieces are-firmly locked to the side rails andthe bedstead is not liable to collapse.
By pushing the sleeves back so that the same release the toesc, the head and foot-pieces are rendered free to be folded over the side rails, and by raising the legs B the bedstead folds up in a comparatively small compass.,
The advantages' of my locking-sleeves over other fasteuings used fr the same purpose are, that they can be made cheap, they are not liable to get out of order, and their form is such that the bed-clothes or the garments of persons moving past the bedstead are not liable to catch therein.
lVhat I' claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The sliding sleeves d and toes c, in combination with the pivoted side rails and the head and footpieces, as hereinvshown and described, for the purpose specified.-
This specification signed by me this 12th day of January, 187].
