FREDERICK H. RICHARDS, OF EAST TAWAS, MICHIGAN.
SASI-I-LOCK.
Application led June 22, 1914.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. RICH- ARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing `at East Tawas, in the county of Iosco and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Sash-Lock; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful sash lock.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a sash lock, of simple, eflieient and practical features of construction.
Another object of the inventionis the provision of a locking member to lock in engagement with the window frame, and provided with double wedging surfaces, with which improved means cooperate, for forcing the locking member into locking position.
rl'he details of construction may be subjected `to alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings z-Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a portion of a window frame, showing a sash therein, partially broken away illustrating the locking mechanism. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, showing the locking member disengaged from the rack of the window frame.
vFig. 3 is a view of a portion of the window sash showing the position of the casing of the locking mechanism. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view. F ig. 5 is a detail View of the locking member showing the double wedged surfaces.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates the window frame having,
a rack plate 2, while 3 denotes the window sash, and 4 the casing of the locking mechanism, whereas 5 marks the locking member having teeth 6, to cooperate with the teeth of the rack, for locking the sash. The casing 4 is embedded in the sash rail as shown, and in which the locking member is guided. Journaled upon transverse pins 7 are the gears 8 and 9. From both faces of the gears eccentrically mounted pins 10 and 11 extend, on which anti-frietional rollers 12 and 13 are journaled. The rollers 12 and 13 operate in the grooves 14 and 15 of the lock- Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Serial No. 846,646.
teeth of the locking member in engagement Y with the teeth 2 of said rack, that is, when the gears are rotated in the directions indicated by the arrows a and b. Mountedin guides of the casing is a plunger 17 having gear teeth 18 meshing with the teeth of the gears 8 and 9. As this plunger 17 is moved in the direction of the arrow c, it is apparent that the gears will partially rotate in the direction of the arrows a and D, thereby causing the rollers to ride upon the camming or wedging surfaces of said grooves, moving the locking member toward the rack. To operate the plunger, a screw member 18 is swiveled upon ball bearings 20, and the threaded end of the screw engage the interior threaded bore of the plunger, and by moving the screw in one direction or the other, the plunger is reciprocated. Mounted in guides 21 of one of the end faces of the casing is a sliding plate 22, having a rack 23. Journaled upon stud pins of the casing are gears 24 and 25, the teeth of which mesh with the teeth 26 of the screw. The rack 23 first engages the gear 24, that is, when the sliding plate is in its raised or normal position. and the teeth of the locking member out of engagement with the teeth of the rack 2. Vhen the sliding plate is moved downwardlv, its rack will first rotate the gear 24, imparting movement to the screw, therebv partiallv moving the plunger. then by moving the plate to its limit in a downward direction the gear 25 is rotated. which in turn will rotate the screw, `which will cause the plunger to complete its movement in "the direction of the arrow c, causing the gears to lock the locking member.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:-
1. In combination with a window frame and sash therein, a rack member on the window frame. a casing carried bv the sash, a locking member guided in the casing provided with teeth to engage the rack and having cam grooves inclined from each other, means operating in opnosite directions wedging in said groove for throwing the locking member into locking position, and a mechanism for operating said means.
2. In combination with a window frame having a rack member, and a sash, a casing for throwing the locking member in locking position, and a mechanism including a plunger -for operating the revolubie mem-J` bers.
3.111 combination ,with window frame andI a sash, Ifa casing cariied by the sash,y a lockingimember mounted in the-casing, said locking inemberland thel frame-having in' @oplet ef thlspatentbmaybe :obtained yfor five cents each, by addressingxhe (tommssioner of Patents,
tei-meshing locking means, said Vlocking member having cam grooves, a pair oi rev- `oliibie elements operating in opposite directions and provided with anti-friction means wedging in said grooves in opposite 20 directions for throwing the locking meinber into locking position, and mechanism #for operatingsaid revohible elements.
in testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of25 two subscribing witnesses. 1
