Description

J. W. LORD.
CARTON.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 18,1915.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
r UTE JOSEPH W. LORD, OF SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE.
CARTON.
Application filed June 18,1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. Loni), citizen of the United States, residing at South Portland, in the county of (lumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cartons and especially to such as are designed to contain a comminuted substance such as salt which may be delivered therefrom in any desired amount through an aperture therein, which aperture is sealed until it is to be used and closed again after use until it is necessary to obtain a fresh supply.
In the drawing herewith accompanying and making apart of this application Fig ure 1 is a plan view of the blank and seal from which the carton is made. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the carton made up and sealed and Fig.3 is a perspective view of the carton made up and unsealed.
Same reference characters refer to like parts in the several figures.
In said drawings A is a, blank provided with slits a, b and c at the top and corresponding slits a, b and c at the bottom forming end closing flaps cl 6 f g at the top and end closingflaps cl 6 f g at the bottom, d and f being substantially half the size of e and g. The flaps (Z and e have portions 72. and 2' removed from the inner adjacent corners as seen in Fig. 1. The blank is adapted to be folded vertically upon the dotted lines 7', 70, Z and m and when thus folded the parts n and a form the sides, the parts 0 and 0, the front and back of the carton and the part m a flap to overlap the meeting edges and bind the two meeting edges together. When the blank is thus folded d e f g and cl 6 f g are folded down upon the top and bottom respectively upon the dotted lines 79 and (I, the parts (Z and f and (l and 7 being folded first and then the parts 6 and g and the parts 6' and g folded down upon them. When thus folded the openings h and i will be located in one of the upper corners of the carton and register and will be covered by the part 9 which is secured to the part c by some adhesive substance in the usual manner. The part 9 may at the corner thereof and on the under side thereof be provided with a binding tape B which may be folded down upon thefront Specification of Letters Patent. i

and edge of the body part and be secured by an adhesive substance as glue or cement. The flap 6 may be creased or weakened on a line 7- at or near the point where the inner edge of the tape lies to facilitate the bind ing or folding of the flap.
The advantage of my improved carton is that it has a convenient vent temporarily sealed but capable of being readily opened to permit the delivery of the contents therethrough and again closed. Again the blank is made from a single piece of paper and the aperture is entirely formed in the blank itself.
Having thus described my invention and its use, I claim:
1. In a carton, a body, side, front and back flaps adapted to fold down upon its top, the inner corners of two adjacent flaps being, provided with openings, whereby, when said two flaps are folded down upon the end of the body, said openings register and form a passage into the carton at the corner thereof, and when the other flap is folded upon them said passage is closed.
' 2. In a carton, a body, side, front and back flaps adapted to fold down upon its top, the inner corners of twoadjaeent flaps being provided with openings, whereby, when said two flaps are folded down upon the end of the body, said openings register and form a passage into the carton at the corner thereof, and when the other flap is folded upon them said passage is closed, and means for securing said outer flap to the inner flaps.
3. In a carton, a body, side, front and back flaps adapted to. fold down upon its top, the inner corners of two adjacent flaps being provided with openings, whereby, when said two flaps are folded down upon the end of the body, said openings register and form a passage into the carton at the corner thereof, and when the other flap is folded upon them said passage is closed, and a flexible fastener secured to the under side of the corner of the outer end flap and adapted to be extended down on adjacent sides of the body and removably secured thereto, whereby said opening is temporarily closed.
4. In a carton, a body, side, front and back flaps adapted to fold down upon its top, the inner corners of two adjacent flaps being provided with openings, whereby, when said two flaps are folded down upon the end of the body, said openings register back at the crease leaving an opening 10 and form a passage into the carton at the through which the contents may be supplied. corner thereof and when the other side flap In testimony whereof I affiX my signature is folded upon them said passage is closed, in presence of two witnesses.
5 said center flap being provided with a folding crease extended diagonally across the JOSEPH L corner thereof and midway the sides of the WVitnesses:
