Patented May 5, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE REYNOLDS GUYEP., or s'r. PAUL, ummm, AssIeNoa 'ro wALno'nP PAPER Paon- Ucrs COMPANY, a conmoaffrrrorror nnmnso'ra CLOSUBE FOB POU'BING CARTONS Application led September 20, 1928. Serial No. 307,128.
This invention relates to a carton ada ted to contain food stuffs or other materia in the form of powder, small particles or granulesV or otherwise of such nature that .they may be poured from an opening in a side or cover of the container.
It is my object to provide a novel carton for. goods of this kind, adapted to facilitate the withdrawal of small quantities of the goods from time to time, as required, the de- .vice being particularly useful in households as a container for salt, sugar or the like.
More articularly it is. my object to provide suc a carton with a slidable closure I5 for a small opening, constructed from the'paper board or other foldable sheet material from which the body of the carton is formed and so arranged that a minimum.
of work is required to seal' the carton and to open it. 4
The invention also includes certain other novel features of construction which will be more fully ointed out in the following specification and) claim. In the drawings, which illustrate the best form of my device at present known to me,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of theblank for forming my .improved carton, laid fiat; Fig. 2 is a to plan view of the carton assembled andl ao w1th the outlet opening closed "Fig. -3 is a plan view of the same with the outlet open and Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. v
As shown in Fig. 1, the blank for forming the carton is divided by crease lines into four side walls 5, 6, 7 and 8, adapted to constitute the body o f the box. A fiange 9 on the wall 5 is arranged to be secr-'ed by adhesive in overlapping relation to the wall 8. Bottom flaps 10 are severally foldable inward at right angles to the walls 5, 6, 7 and 8. Along the opposite edge of the blank a similar series of flaps, indicated by the numerals 11, 12, 13 14 and 15 is arranged to close the top of the carton.
- The iiap 15 is designed to be folded upon the exterior o f the other flaps when the carton is closed. This Hap is formed with an outlet opening 16 and another opening 21,
, 59 adapted to. allow access to a slidable closure,
. when said ila as hereinafter described.Y An opening 17 is die-cut in the flap 13 in such a position that is folded inward at the top of the carton t e opening 17 will register with the opening 16. The iiap 14 is folded inward between the flaps 13 and 15 when the carton is closed, and this iap 14 has a closure strip 18 cut therefrom in such a position that it lies across and between the openingsv 16 and 17 when the carton is assembled. The closure strip 18 is joined by a crease line 19 to a tab 20 and this tab is only partially severed from the flap 14 in the initial die-cutting of the blank. Thus, the closure strip 18 is held in place in the plane of the flap 14 by the tab 20. To a cross hatched area22 of the flap 13 and the similarly marked closure 18 and top 20 is applied an adhesive, repellant substance. The surfaces thus indicated are preferablyr rinted upon with a suitable ink to which t e adhesive subsequently applied willl not adhere. V
' To secure the blank in box shape, the several walls 5, 6, 7 and S-are folded at right angles to each other and the flange 9 is then fastened upon the wall 8 by a suitable adhesive. The several bottom flaps 10 are now folded at right anglesto their attached side walls and secured together by adhesive in overlapping relation, as indicated in Fig. 4. The box is subsequently filled with the granular or powdered goods' and then the top aps 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 are successively folded inward upon each other in the order named, adhesive eing applied between the several iiaps-to secure them together Vand seal the carton. The glue or the like,`thus applied, does not cause adhesion between the closure strip 18, tab 20 and abutting surfaces of the flaps 13 and 15.
It will be noted thatwhen the carton has thus been sealed the tab 20 is accessible through the opening 21 in the outer flap 15. When it is desired to open the'carton and withdraw the contents, the point of a knife may be readily 'inserted beneath the tab 20 and said tab separated from the iap 14, partial separation having been effected previously in the die-cutting of the blank. The tab is then extended through the opening 21 by 100 `GIS folding it along the crease line 19. Now the closure 18 is free to slide in the plane of the flap 14 and to be Withdrawn to uncover the outlet openings 16 and 17 by grasping the tab 20. Thus, the closure strip 18 may readily be moved from the closed position indicated in Fig. 2to the open position indicated in Figs. 3 and 4.
The opening 17 has an enlargement 23 extending laterally the full Width of the closure 18 and longitudinally of said closure to its inner extremity. This enlargement 23 prevents the lodging of the granular contents in the guide way for the closure 18. Any granular material which passes into path of the closure 18, When the latter is in open position, is pushed back into the carton through the enlargement 23 by movement of the closure to closed position.
It will now be understood that the pouring opening and closure are formed in the operation of die-cutting the blank and the adhesive repcllant is applied to the closure 18 and area 22 in the operation of printing the blank. As is Well known, such cartons are commonly given an attractive appearance by printing upon the exterior surfaces. Thus, the blank for my improved carton is produced with a minimum of expense. Further, the operation of folding and securing the blank in box form is performed with the same facility with my improved carton as with cartons of the common type Without the pouring and closure features.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: l
A carton comprising, a body formed from foldahle sheet material, outer, inner and intermediate flaps secured one upon another, said outer and inner Haps having outlet openings registering one with the other and an imperforate closure for said openings formed from said intermediate fiap and slidable in the plane thereof to open and close said openings, said opening in said inner flap being formed with an enlargement extending the full width of said closure to permit ready removal of granular substances from the path of said closure.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
REYNOLDS GUYER.
