HUTCH- WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 26, 1914. Serial No. 827,396.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WVILLIAM KAYLoR, a citizen of the United States, residing-at Muskogee, in the county of Muskogee and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do declare the following to be a full, vclear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to vided, whereby a nut may be quickly and a readily engaged thereby, the pivoted jaw operating automatically.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a wrench in which the pivoted j awthereof is provided with shoulders, one being designed to form an engaging shoulder for the object, and the other a stop shoulder for engagement with a portion of the head of the wrench.
Still another object of the invention resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very ellicient and useful in operation.
WVith these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application: Figure 1 is a plan view of a'wrench constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough; Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the device; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section therethrough as seen on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
In describing the invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a shank of any desired length on one end of which is formed a head 2, the latter being somewhat arcuate in design, and
formed on one end of this head to projectlongitudinally thereof is a jaw 3 forming the stat1onary jaw of the wrench. The

stationary jaw has the engaging face thereof arranged substantially at right angles to the outer face of the head member 2' and said head member 2 is slotted at the end thereof opposite that on which the jaw'3 is formed, said slot being indicated as at 4. Pivoted on a pivot pin or pintle 5 extending through the walls of this slotted portion 4 is a piv oted jaw 6,the latter being designed for cooperation with the stationary jaw 3.
In order to provide a neat appearing and perfect operating jaw, the same is reduced on its inner end to form a tongue 7, the latter being received inthe slotted portion 4 of the head member, and this tongue or reduced portion 7 of the jaw 6 is somewhat arcuately designed. A shoulder 8 is formed on the tongue portion 7 which is arranged substantially at right angles to the outer engaging portion ofthe jaw and this shoulder 8 completes the formation of the outer face of the head 2 when said jaw 6 is disposed in itsnormal position as shown in full lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing. When the jaw 6 is disposed outwardly, however, with respect to the stationary jaw 3, this shoulder projects outwardly in the space betweenthe jaws and is adapted for engagement with the object to be grasped. In order to limit the outward swinging movement of the jaw 6 with respect to the stationary jaw 3, an additional shoulder 9 is formed on the tongue portion 7 which is designed to abut against the nut or other object engaged between the jaws, but when drawing back on the wrench for another hold on the nut, this jaw 6 is adapted to move outwardly, so that the shoulder 9 limits this outward movement of the jaw by abutting the shoulder 10 on the head of the wrench. As stated above, the tongue portion 7 of this pivoted jaw 6 is pivotally held between the walls of the slotted portion 4ofthe head by means of a pin or pintle 5 and this pintle is of screwlike formation, the same being provided with a slot .in one end and threaded at the. j
other for engagement with threads in the opening of one wall of the slotted portion. Thus, it will be seen that this pintle may be readily applied or removed when desired, so that in case of necessity, the movable jaw 6 may be readily removed from the head of the wrench.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved wrench, the manner of applying the same to use and the operation thereof will be readily understood, and it will be seen that l have provided a device which is simple and durable in con struction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.
While l have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion, and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A wrench. of the class described comprising a shank, a head formed on one end thereof provided with a flat outer face, a fixed jaw formed on one end of head and having its engaging face arranged at right angles to the flat face thereof, the opposite end of said head being slotted, a movable jaw provided with a reduced segmental inner end pivotally held between the walls of the slotted portion of said head, a shoulder formed in the peripheral edge of the mental portion of the movable jaw and arranged contiguous with and at right angles to the engaging face thereof, to provide a grip 'iing portion thereon, and means als formed onthe segmental portion of said movable jaw adapted for engagement with a portion of the head on said shank to limit the outward swinging movement of said movable jaw on the head'.
2-. A wrench of the class described comprising a shank, a head formed at one end thereof provided with a flat outer face slotted at one end of the same, a fixed jaw formed on the opposite end of said. head and having its engaging face extending substantially at right angles to the flat face of said head, a movable jaw provided with a reduced arcuate portion pivoted-between the walls of the slotted portion of said head, the peripheral edge of said arcuate portion, inwardly of the pivotal point being provided with a pair of spaced shoulders, one of said shoulders being designed to form a gripping portion on the movable jaw, and an additional shoulder formed on the inner wallof the slotted portion of said head adapted to abut the other shoulder on said arcuate portion to limit the outward swinging movement of said movable jaw on the head.
3. A wrench of the class described comprising a shank, a head formed on one end thereof provided with a. flat outer face, a fixed jaw formed on one end of said head and having its engaging face arranged at right angles to the flat face of said head, the opposite end of said head being slotted, a movable jaw provided with a reduced segmental inner end pivotally held between the walls of the slotted portion of said head, shoulders formed in the peripheral edge of the segmental portion of the jaw and arranged in planes substantially atright angles to one another, the one Sl'lOllldGl" being arranged contiguous with and at right angles to the engaging face of the movable jaw to provide a gripping portion thereon, and an additional shoulder formed on the inner wall of the slotted portion of the head adapted to abut the other shoulder on the segmental portion to limit the outward swinging movement of the movable jaw on said head.-
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
