Letters Patent No. 111,770, dated February 14, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLIND-SLAT REGULATORS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom Iit may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN T. CDONOGHUE and ALEXANDER LEAvITT, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Blind-Regulator; and wedo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use vthc same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part ot' this specilication.
Our invention relates to window-bliiuls, und consists in a peculiar mode of combining a spring-held toothed wheel with the slut and stile. Figure 1 is a partial front view of a blind having our improved regulating apparatus applied, the stile having a part broken out to show the wheel and springs; and
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation of the same.
Similar letters ot` rete-rence indicate corresponding parts.
A is the stile ci' thc blind, in which we make a large circular or othersha-ped recess, B, in the side, in which the bearings for the pivots ot the slats C are placed, and with its longitudinal axis coincident with that of one of the slats, in which recess we arrange a toot-hed or notched wheel, D, on the pivot ofthe slat projecting into it, the notches of which are so formed that it may turn either way while having one or more spring-holdinglpawls, E, engaging with it with sui cient power to hold it and the slats, which are all` connected together in the usual or any approved way, against turning, and we close this recess by a plate, G, through which the pivot passes. We strengthen the ordinary wood pivot of the slat carrying thc wheel by metal plates H,.attached, as shown, or in any approved way; or we may make the pivot wholly ot' metal, and ati-ach it in any approved way. l
Wc propose to apply one or more ot' these wheels and holding pawls t0 each set of slats, but generally only one will be required to each.
Bythis simple apparatus the slats maybe held inl any required position, as will be clearly secu. s The wheel may be placed in front ofthe side of the stile, the pivot passing through it into the stile; but we prefer to incloseit in a recess, as shown.
Having thus described our invention,
We claim as new, and desire to secure Letters f Patent#- '.lhe side-recessed stile B, combined with a Slat, C, and spring-held toothed wheel D, both pivoted in the center oi said recess, as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN T. ODOKNOGHUE.
