BACK-BAND BUCKLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 19114.
Application filed January 28, 1914. Serial No. 815,041.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN It. MCKELVY, a citizen of the United States, residingat Greenfield, in the county of l/Veakley and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back-Band Buckles, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in harness attachments and more particularly to a back band buckle, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character which may be adjusted in position as desired.
A further object of the invention resides in providing an improved back band buckle which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very eflicient and useful in operation.
W'ith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the longitudinal section therethrough as seen on line 2-2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section therethrough as seen on line 33, Fig. 1.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawingin which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a flat tongue or shank, one end of which is designed to form a closed loop or the like 2. A base plate or the like 3 is also provided, one end of which is designed to provide a pair of upstanding knuckles 4r. which are pivotally engaged with the loop 2 on opposite sides of the tongue 1. This base plate has the side edges thereof curved or bent upwardly to form flanges, and the tongue is adapted to rest on the upper face of the plate when the device is applied to use, so as to prevent engagement of the operating parts with the back of the animal. The under face of this base plate 3 has a keeper 4 formed thereon through which the back hand strap may be disposed. The loop 2 is adapted to be engaged with any desired portion of the harness, and, in this manner, the complete device may be securely positioned on the back of an animal.
The tongue 1 is provided with a plurality of spaced openings 5 and slidably mounted on the tongue is a keeper 6 which is provided with an extension 7 having its outer end curved to form a hook 8. Formed on the upper face of the extension 7 are a pair of ears 9 between which are fulcrumed a dog or the like 10, one end of the latter being adapted to cooperate with the end of the hook 8 to form substantially a snap hook with respect thereto. A spring 11 is arranged in connection with this dog to normally retain the latter in its closed position with respect to the hook. The other end of the dog 10 has a depending stud 12 carried thereon which is designed for reception through a channel 13 extending completely through the upper face of the keeper 6. The stud is adapted to project below the upper portion of the keeper (3 for reception in any one of the openings 5 in said tongue 1. Thus, from this construction, it will be seen that the keeper (3 may be adjusted to any desired position on the tongue 1 and secured in this position by the engagement of the depending stud 12 with one of the openings 5.
This device will admit of ready adjustment to accommodate checks of various lengths, and it will be seen that the check rein may be readily engaged or disengaged from the hook 8 by the actuation of the pawl or dog 10. It is only necessary to force downwardly upon the one end of the pawl or dog 10 to disengage the stud 12 from the openings in the member 1, and, in this manner, said keeper with the hook thereon may be adjusted to any desired position on said tongue.
From the foregoing description, the manner of applying the device to use and the operation thereof will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.
While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, What is claimed is 1. A back band buckle comprising a tongue provided with a plurality of openings, a keeper slidably mounted thereon and provided With an extension designed to form a hook, a spring held dog fulcrumed on the extension of the keeper and designed to normally close the hook, and means in connection with the dog for cooperation with the openings in the tongue to retain the keeper and parts carried thereby in any adjusted position thereon.
2. A backband buckle of the class described comprising a shank provided with a plurality of spaced openings, a keeper slidably mounted on the tongue and provided with an extension designed to form a hook, and with an opening adapted for registration with the openings in said shank, a spring forced dog fulcrumed on the extension of said keeper and designed to normally close the hook, and a stud also carried on said dog and disposed through the opening in the keeper to engage the openings in said shank, whereby to retain said keeper and parts carried thereby in any adjusted position on said crank.
A device of the class described comprising a base plate, a shank pivoted to one end thereof to rest on said plate, a hook member slidably carried on said shank, means for closing said hook member, and means in connection With the last referred to means for retaining the hook member in any adjusted position on the shank.
4. A device of the class described com prising a base plate, a shank pivotally carried on one end of said base plate to rest on the latter, said shank being provided with a plurality of spaced openings, a keeper slidably mounted on said shank, an extension formed on the keeper and designed to form a hook member, a springforced dog fulcrumed on the extension of said keeper to normally close said hook, and means in connection with said dog adapted to be disposed through said keeper for engagement with the openings in said shank to retain the.
keeper and parts carried thereby in any adjusted position on said shank.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ailiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN R. MoKELVY.
