Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and StateV vof New, York, have invented certain new and 'usei'ul Improvements in Collapsible the following is a specifi- This invention relates broadly to the class `of musical instruments and more particularly to drums.

The primary object of the invention contemplates the provision of a oldable or collapsible drum wherein the drum ends or heads may be telescoped one within the other so that the drum during shipment will occupy only a minimum amount of space, and will, when collapsed, facilitate the handling of the drum when not in use.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of novel and peculiar means including a plurality of spaced apart bars or rods detachably arranged upon the periphery of the drum body, the removal of which will allow the said drum to be folded or collapsed should occasion demand.

A still further object of the invention is to create a shipping receptacle o-ut of the drum body, and to provide the said bodyfwith an opening or doorway leading thereinto, this admitting the insertion or incasement of a smaller drum or other musical instrument into the interior of the drum body during the shipment or conveyance of the latter.

The collapsible feature is particularly desirable in the larger sizes of drums, such as are commonly known as bass-drums.

The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then morey particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application.

In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the severa-l views, and in which:

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral l designates the body cie the drum, which is formed of any suitable lieirible material such as sheep-skin or the like, and which is adapted when adjusted, to form a body ot' the proper shape between the drum heads 2 of the instrument. The drum heads 2 are each secured to a suitable flesh-hoop 3 in the usual manner over and upon which a retaining-hoop e; is passed for holding the said flesh-hoop in the desired position to retainr the drum heads under tension. Adjacent each retaining-hoop and within the Flesh-.hoop 3 I provide a pair of body retaining-hoops 5, the latter serving the double purpose of supporting the .said heads 2 in the desired position and retaining the iieXible material of which the body is composed in drawn or in tight condition during operation of the instrument for the purpose for which it is designed. Any suitable means snch as the usual fastening mechanism shown at 6 may be employed for tightening the heads 2 upon the drum.

Having described in det-ail the manner in which the drum proper is constructed, the collapsible feature will now be -fully set forth. Arranged upon the periphery of the body portion in uniform spaced relation, I provide a plurality of spacing bars 7, the upper extremity oi' the said bar being 3rovided with a notch 8 adapted to receive suitable pins 9 secured to the periphery of the upper body retaining band or hoop 5, while the lower extremity of the said bar 7 is also provided with a notch 9 disposed at one side thereof, the said notch 9 adapted to likewise receive a pin l0 projecting from the peripheryT of the lower body retaining band, where it is held through the medium of a thumb-nut l1, the operation or tightening of which will eiiect a secure clamp connection between the said bar 7 and the lower band 5.

A removable door l2 is .secured to the body l by means of a plurality of buttons 13, the said buttons adapted to fit within suitable holes lll formed within the said door. An opening 15 is provided within the drum body l beneath the said door 12 to permit the insertion or storage of either a smaller drum or other musical instruments within the interior of the drum body when it is desired that the drum should be used for that purpose. Any suitable hinge connection such as is designated. as at 16 may be afforded for the said door l2.

One of the drum heads 2 is made smaller than the other one so as to permit the said heads, when the drum is folded to telescope or fit one within the other, this arrangement of the two drum sections or heads bringing the same into close proximity and facilitating the sl'iipping and the handling of the drum when not in use. l

To collapse or fold the drum, the thumbnut il is loosened sufficiently upon the pin l0 to permit movement of the bar 7 so as to withdraw the lower end of the said bar from engagement with the said pin l0, whereupon the notch 8 formed within the upper end of the saidV bar may be disengaged from the pin 9 of the' upper band. Theremoval of all of said bars in the manner above described will allow the drum body to completely collapse or telescope as is shown in F ig. e of the drawings, thus materially reducing the size of the drum and facilitating the conveyance or shipment of the drum from place to place.

By the provision of the opening 15 of the drum body, it will be seen that the interior of the drum may be used as a storage receptacle capable of fully protecting any musical or other instrument that may be contained therein.

scription, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical, yet realizing that the lconditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when reouired, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a collapsible drum, the combination with a -pair of drum heads, one of which is of smaller diameter than the other, of a flexible body portion connecting said drum heads, a plurality of peripherally arranged spacing and bracing rods to normally hold said drum heads in a separated position, a plurality of pins carried by said drum heads to coact with said rods, longitudinal notches being formed inthe upper end of each rod to seat the adjacent pins and prevent collapse of said drum heads, transverse notches being formed in the lower end of each rod to facilitate the removable positioning of said rods and to similarly coact with adjacent pins, and means preventing casual lateral displacement of said rods at their lower ends.

2. ln a collapsible drum,l the combination with' a pair' of drum heads of different diameters capable of a telescopic action together, of a flexible body portion connecting` said drum heads to permit such telescopic action and to prevent undue separation of the heads, and means for wedging said drum heads apart to their limit of separation, said means including a plurality of peripherally arranged pins carried by said drum heads, and a plurality of bracing rods, each rod being formed at its upper end with a longitudinal notch for engaging the adjacent pin preparatory to wedging said rods in position, and each rod being further formed at its opposite extremity with a transverse notch for the lateral reception of aA proper pin, and means preventing casualy lateral displacement of said rods.

3. ln a collapsible drum, the combina'- tion with a pair of drum heads of di'erent diameters capable of a telescopic action t0- Cfether, of a flexible body portion connecting said drum heads to permit such telescopic action and to preventundue separation of the heads, and means for wedging said drum heads apart to their limit of separation as determined by said body portion, said' means including a plurality of periplierally arranged pins carried by each of saidv drum heads, and a plurality of bracing rods, anges formed upon each of said rods at the ends thereof, each upper flange being provided with a longitudinal notch for engaging the adjacent pin preparatory to wedging said drum heads in their separatedA position, and each lower flange being formed with a transverse notch for the lateral reception of a proper pin, and means preventing casual lateral displacement of said rods at their lower ends.
