SASI-I-FASTENEB.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, .CHAPLns L. Wrorrr,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Logansport, in the county of Cass and State 5 of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of
which the following is. a specification- My invention relates to improvements in latches adapted to be used in connection with windowsashes, tohold or bolt them in open or -closed positions:
An important object of the invention is'to provide a device of the above-mentioned character which is simple in construction, 15
cheap to manufacture, and convenient in use. '-A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above-mentioned character, embodying a convertible boltelement,
whereby the device may be secured to either the same in place. V I Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
v Figure 1 is a side elevation of alatch emb'odying my invention showing the same in place. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3. is a plan view of the same.- Fig. 4c is a transverse section taken on line H of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the device. Fig. 6 is an. enlarged perspective view of a combined latch plate and bolt, and Fig.'= .7 is a" similar view of atrack or base plate.
1 In the drawings wherein is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numerals 10 and 11 designate upper and lower sashes, mounted for vertical reciprocatory movement frame embodying a vertical jamb or side 12, as shown. The numeral 13 designates my device, as a whole, which is preferably secured to the upper end of the lower sash frame near either vertical edge thereof. 7 I
This device comprises a track or base plate 14, rigidly secured to the, upper end of the lower sash frame, by means of screws 15' or the like, as shown. As clearly shown in Fig.
i 7, the base plate 14 is provided with longitudinallyextendinggrooves 15 and 16, ar-
ranged upon the upper face thereof. The

corner of the window, and employed to lock grooves 15 and 16 forming upstanding longitudinal flanges or ribs 17. and 18 as shown. slidably mounted upon the base plate 14 to move longitudinally thereof, is a latch plate 19, provided at its inner end with a lip PatentedSept. 1914.
or extension 20, as shown. Extending longitudinally of the latch plate and preferably formed integral therewith is a recipro catory bolt 21, having oneend 22 formed preferably square in cross-section and the opposite end 23 formed circular in cross-section. A handle 24 is rigidly attached to the endportion 22, to move the same. Thebolt and plate 19 are provided with a longitudinal slot25, for a purpose .tobe described. The bolt 21 extendsupwardly and downwardly' beyond the opposite faces of the latch plate 19, forming in efl'ectribs to fit in the groove 15, (the plate 19being invertible) while the latch plate is provided with later ally extending longitudinalribs or flanges 6 and 26 adapted to engage the outer edges of theribs 17 and 18; y f
A cap-plate 27 is slidably mounted'upon the latch-plate- 19, with a longitudinal groove 28, to receive the upper portion of thebolt 21, extending above the latch-plate.
There areribsorrflanges 28 carried by the cap-plate to engage between the upper ribs 26 and 26, to hold saidcap-plate against turning .movement," as shown. A binding bolt 29 passes-through a central opening in the. cap-plate 27 and through the longitudinal slot25 tohave screw-threaded engagement in a central screw-threaded aperture 30, of the base plate 14, :asshown, A spacing sleeve 31 is carried by the binding bolt 2'9, and is arranged between the cap-plate 27 and the base-plate It, to prevent binding action of the movable partshaving slidable engagement with each other.
The latch plate 19 is provided near its outer end with an opening 32, to receive a lock pin 33, adapted to enter either of spaced openings 34 formed in the base-plate, to
lockthe latch plate and bolt against movement. v Secured upon the vertical member of the upper sash frame are spaced superposed keepers 35 and 36 provided with horizontal grooves 37, to receive the lip or extension 20. The vertical member jamb 12 is provided with openings to receive spaced superposed sleeves or bushings 38, disposed adjacent the keepers 35 and '36. The sleeves 38 receive the end. 23 of the bolt'2l, as is obvious. The
' sage of the keepers, as is obvious.
The operation of thedevioe is as follows:The lower sash may be moved to either closed or ventilating positions. This having been done, the bolt 21 is moved outwardly, whereby the end 23 thereof enters socket 38, while lip simultaneously moves into groove 37. It isv thus seen that the upper sash is locked to the lower sash'and the lower sash locked'to the jamb or side of the frame. The 'pin 33 may be inserted in the opening 3a to hold the latch plate and bolt against movement. The base plate l'vmay be secured to eithercorner of the lower sash frame, and the lock-plate 19 may be'inverted so that the bolt 21, will extend outwardly in the proper direction to enter the socket 39, asiis obvious. Itis obvious that either set of ribs carried by the lock-plate are adapted to have detachable interlocking slidable engagement with the ribs of the baseqplater Thecaplate 27: is of course removable to permit 0 the inverting of thelock-plate.
It is to be understood that the forms of my invention'are to be taken as preferred embodiments of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or, scope of the sub-joinedclaims.
7 Having described my invention what I 1. Apparatus to lock' sash-iframes together v slot; means to-secure the lock-plate to the upper end of the lower sash-frame including i an element passing through the longitudinal slot; a second bolt secured to one end of the lock-plate in substantially'parallel relation to the first-named bolt; and means carried by the upper sash frame, to engage the second bolt. 2. In apparatus-of the character described,
a guide plateadapted to be secured'to one end ofva sash frame and provided with a plurality of grooves, a lock plate provided upon its opposite sides with corresponding ribs'to enter the grooves of the guide plate whereby the lock plate may be inverted and having a longitudinally slotted bolt formed gitudinal slotfin the bolt.
8. In apparatus of the character described, a, guide plate adapted to be secured to one end of a sash frame and provided with a j plurality of grooves,- a lock plate provided with depending ribs to be slidably mounted within the grooves and havinga longitudinally slotted bolt formed integral therewith and adapted to eng ge, vWith the window 1 7 frame, a cap plate slidably engaging the upper surface of the lock plate and a bolt connecting the cap plate and guideplate and passing through the longitudinal slot in the bolt, and means to holdthelock plate in ad'- justm'ent at a desired position with relation to the guide plate. a I a In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
