stove pipe holders and has for its primary object the provision of a holder whereby both the vertical and horizontal sections of the stove pipe are rigidly supported with respect to the chimney.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above-mentioned character which is capable of adjustment to accommodate pipes whose horizontal portions are of different lengths and to this end I provide a deviceincluding a plurality of telescopic sections. j

A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the class in ques-- tion with means by which thejdevice is effectively sustained by the walls of the smoke flue and said means being adjustable to permit of its use with different size Hues.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a holder comprising adjustable members, one of which is etl ectively sustained in position by the walls of the chimney and which projects through the flue opening for connection with the pipe, and a flexible adjustment by which the holder maybe tilted to permit the insertion of the horizontal section of the pipe withinthe flue opening. i i

I further aim to provide a device of the class described provided with means where by the device may be tilted upwardly to permit the insertion of the horizontal. section of the stove pipe within the flue opening, and automatically return the device to its normal position. 7

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a stove pipe holder which is effectively sustained in position by the walls of the smoke flue and adapted to support both the vertical and horizontal sections of the stove pipe and so connected therewith that the pipe may be removed from the holder without disconnecting the sections or disturbing the holder.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character described comprising comparatively few parts which may be readily assembled or disassembled,

as the occasion may demand, and which may be quickly fitted or removed from the flue.

iVith these and other objects in view which will appear asthe nature of the invention is better understood, the invention resides in the specific construct-ion, combination and arrangement of parts which will hereinafter be more fully described and particularly pointed outin the accompanying claims.

The improved holder forming the subject matter of this invention comprises as illustrated in one embodiment thereof an outer hollow member .4 of substantially rectangular formation having its bottom wall longitudinally slotted, as at The said outer member 4 is effectively sustained in operative position by the walls of the smoke one end of the member i being seated in a suitable recess 7 in the rear wall 8, while the opposite end. of the said member projects through the flue opening 10 a considerable distance beyond the chimney breast 11 and is connected with the horizontal section 2 of the stove pipe, in a manner hereinafter described.

The said rod 18 in the present instance is substantially Z-shaped, the vertical portion 19 of which passes upwardly through the slot 5 of the outer member and the opening 16 of One end of the said rod is arranged within the said outer member, being extended rearwardly beyond the said inner member, while the opposite end of the said rod is extended in a forward direction and terminates in a point which'is adapted to be embedded in the breast of the chimney with a view of rigidly supporting the device properly positioned with respect to the flue openings therein. It will be noted that when the device is so positioned the same will rest on the bottom wall of the said flue opening.

lVith a view of providing a flexible adjustment by means of which the device may be tilted vertically so as to permit the insertion of the horizontal portion of the stove pipe within the flue opening, after the holder has been positioned in the chimney as hereinabove described, I employ a leaf spring 20 which has oneend rigidly secured in any suitable manner between the walls of said inner member, while the free end of the said spring projects rearwardly from the upper" wall of said inner member a considerable distance beyond the. end thereof. The body portion of the spring is spaced from the upper wall of said inner member and normally engages the said bar 18 so as to effectively retain the latter in engagement with the breast of the chimney. By reason of-the fact that the said inner and outer members are connected together, it is obvious thattheentire device may be tilted upwardly against:

the tension of the spring 20 away from the bottom wall of the flue opening to permit insertion of the horizontal section of the stove pipe within said opening, and after which the said spring operates to automatically return the device to its normal position. The horizontal portion of the pipe is provided with suitable openings 21, through which are extended screw bolts 22 provided with nuts 23. j The openings 21 are arranged to register with the slot 5 of the outer member so that when the pipe is being inserted within the flue opening the screw bolts 22 enter the slot 5, and after the pipe is properly positioned within the said flue opening the screws are tightened to rigidly connect the pipe and holder together.

' The outer most of said screw bolts 22 has connected thereto one end of a flexible ele-' ,ment 24:. The element 24; has its opposite end connected with a hook 25, and the said hook as well as the element 24% is passed through the elbow and pipe sections, so that the hook 25 may be passed between the joint of one of the vertical sections of the pipe and secured to the lower end thereof- The flexible element is constructed from resilient material so that when the hook 25 1s properly positioned the element 2 1' willexert a tension between the hook and screw bolt to which it is attached to retain the hook in effective engagement with the vertical section. By reason of the connection between the pipe and holder it is manifest that when taking down the'pipe it is only necessary to loosen the screw bolt 22when the entire pipe may be removed from the holder and carried out doors before disconnecting the sections or without disturbing the holder. 7

The leaf spring 20 as hereinabove described affords a flexible adjustment by means of which the holder may be tilted vertically, after being so positioned to permit the insertion of the horizontal section ofthestove pipe within the flue opening of the chimney, after which the said spring auto matically returns the holder to its normal position which will be found to be immovably fixed between the walls of the chimney. The pipe of course is provided with the aforementioned screw boltswhich enter the slot 5 of the outer member as the'said pipe is being inserted in the flue opening, and with these parts so arranged the saidscrews are tightened thus rigidly connecting the said pipe and holder together. While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it is to be understood that I am not to be limited to the precise construction and arrangement of parts herein illustrated, as various changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or nature ofthe invention.

What I claim is 1. A pipe holder comprising a member having a longitudinal slot, a second member slidably mounted therein, a breast engaging device mounted on the second member and having a portion extending through and terminating below said slot, the said second member being adjustable to bring said portion into engagement with the breast of the chimney, and means for holding said member in adjusted position.

2. A pipe holder comprising a member having a longitudinal slot, a second member slidably mounted therein, a breast engaging device mounted for rocking movement on said last mentioned member and having a portion extending through and terminating below said slot, said second member being adjustable to bring said portion into engagement with the breast of the chimney, and means for holding said member against sliding movement.

8. A pipe holder comprising a member having a longitudinal slot, a second member slidably mounted therein,a breast engaging device mounted for rocking movement on said last mentioned member and yieldably connected therewith, and having a portion extending through and terminating below said slot, said second member being adjustable to bring said breast engaging device into engagement with the chimney, and means for holding said member in adjusted position.

4. A pipe holder comprising a member having a longitudinal slot, a second member slidably mounted therein, means for holding said member against sliding movement, and a breast engaging device mounted on said last mentioned member and having a portion extending through and terminating I be low said slot, said member being adjustable to bring said portion into engagement with the breast of the chimney, in combination with a pipe section having means slidable in said slot and adjustable against the member and operable to hold the latter and said pipe section connected with each other.

5. A pipe holder for chimneys comprising a member extending through the pipe opening in thebreast of the chimney, means adjustably mounted on said member and extending into the vertical fine and lying against the breast thereof, and yieldable means bearing against the first means and operable to permit said member to be tilted thereon.

6. A pipe holder for chimneys comprising a member extending into the pipe opening in the breast of the chimney, a second member slidably mounted therein, means mounted on said second member and extending into the vertical flue and lying against the breast thereof, yieldable means bearing against the first means and operable to permit said member to be tilted and a retaining device carried by said second member and adjustable against the first member as described.

7. A pipe holder for chimneys comprising a member extending into the pipe opening in the breast of the chimney and traversing the vertical flue of the chimney, means on said member for engagement against the inner wall of the breast of the chimney to hold the member against movement in one direction, said member having one of its ends seated against the opposite wall of the chimney and held thereby against movement in another direction, and adjustable telescopic sections extending from said member.

8. A pipe holder for chimneys comprising a member extending through the pipe openin in the chimney and having a longitudina slot, a second member slidably mounted therein, a breast engaging device mounted on said member and having a portion extending through and terminating below said slot in parallelism therewith, a removable handle carried by said last mentioned member and having a portion extending through said slot whereby to adjust said member to bring said breast engaging device into engagenient with the chimney, and means for holding said member in adjusted position.

9. A pipe holder comprising a member having a longitudinal slot, a second member slidably mounted therein, a substantially Z-shaped rod carried by the second member and having a portion arranged within said outer member and a portion extended through and disposed below said slot in parallelism therewith, said second member being adjustable to bring said rod into engagedisposed below said slot, a spring secured to Copies of this patent may be obtained for fiveeents each, by addressing the Commissioner of I atents,;
