TICKET-I-IOLDER.
Specfication of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 17, 1913.
Patented sept. 8, 1914,. serial No. 807,886.
To all whom, it may camera:
'Be it lmown that I, Finn) AUGUs'r SEM- MELi-iAoir, a citizen of the United States, re-
` siding at vVVatersmeet, in the county of Gogebic and State 'of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ticket-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.V w
This invention relates to certain improvemeiits in ticket holders and has relation niore particularly to a-device of this general type especially designed and adapted for use by conductors of railway passenger trains; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of thisl general Character having novel and improved means whereby the identifying checks, generally employed by conductors, inay be conveniently retained within the holder in such a manner as to be withdrawn therefroin singly.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and `arraiigement of the several parts of iny improved ticket holder whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as Will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim. In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accom` panying drawings, whereint Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a Vertical longitudinal sectional view taken through Fig. 1, with an uppermost check shown in partly withdrawn position; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device as illustrated in Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the body or casing of a holder, preferably produced of metal and` of a configuration in longitudinal section in conformity with the design of the checks which it is adapted to receive, and has its upper end open, the upper marginal portons of the sides of such holder being fieXed 01.' bent inwardly, as indicated at 2, in order to afiord flanges to overlie the checks 3 whereby such checks will be maintained within the holder iii a manner to be hereiiiafter more particularly referred to.v One end of the holder has its upper marginal portion fieXed or bent to afl'ord the outwardly directed fiange 4;, such ,flange being positioned in a plane slightly below the plane occupied by the flanges 2 and thus produces a delivery opening for the uppermost lcheck 3, it being observedthat the fiange 4: prevents injury, such as tearing, to`
the check 3 during its removal from within the holder. The opposite end of the holder,v as indicated at 5,is cut away and thus provides -a means whereby a supply of checks 3 may be positioned within the holder.
Slidably positioned within the holder 1 is the follower 6 which is provided with the depending fianges 7 adapted to engage the adj acent walls of the holder proper whereby such follower 6 is maintained .in operative position within the holder. The checks 3 are adapted to be positioned above such follower 6, which follower under the influence of the expansible member 8, herein shown as a coil spring, coacts with the fianges 2 and thus serves to iefiectively clamp or maintain the checks 8 against accidental displacement, in a nianner which is believed to be clearly apparent.`
As herein disclosed, the follower 6 at substantially its center `is provided With the 'site end or extremity of Vsuch spring 8 is similarly interlocked with the inwardly directed spurs or tongues 10 struck from the base or bottom of the holder 1, as is believed to be particularly shown in Fig. 2 o
of the accompanying drawings. It is to be observed that certain of the flanges 7 are adapted to contact with the base of the cas-` ing 1 so that undue compression of the coil spring 8 is prevented and which arrangement in practice has been found to be of especial advantage.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a ticket holdei` constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and isl particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and by reason of the effectiveness with which it performs its functions, and it will also be obvious that my invention is' iio susceptible of some change and modification without material departure froin the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as liniting myself to the precse arrangelnent and forination of the several parts herein shown in carrying out niy invention in practice.
I clailn:
A device of the character described com'- prising a casing, having'its upper face open and having the upper marginal portion of one end open, the upper lnarginal portion of the opposite end being'provided With an outwardly disposed fiange, the free marginal portions of the side being provided With inwardly disposed flanges, the fiange at the end of the casng being positioned a prede- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing jacent Walls of the casing, and a coil spring interposed between the follower and the bottom of the casing, such follower and bottom of tlnI vcasing having inwardly directed tongues struck therefrom and lnterlocklng With the coils of the spring, certain of said fianges of the follower beingadapted to contact With the base of the casing to prevent undue compression of the ooil spring.
