GUARD For. Enenn TOOLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented'Sept. 1, 1914.
Application filed April 30, 1913. Serial No. 764,723.
To all whom it may concern: I
'Be it known that I, HANNIBAL J. A. CoN'ri, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allevented new and useful Improvements in Guards for Edged Tools, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in guards to protect the edge of cutting tools. The object of my invention is to produce tools and capable of being so positioned upon the tool as to protect the cutting edge thereof, when not in use, and to be readily positioned thereon to expose the cutting edge for use. I accomplish this purpose by means of the device hereinafter more specifically described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, inwhich Figure 1 is a front elevation of the blank of my improved chisel guard. Fig. 2 is the same when formed foruse. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a chisel, showing the application of my device thereto. Fig. at is a side elevation of the same, showing the guard'in use and out of use.
. Referring to said drawings, 1 is the blade or shank of a chisel.
2 -is my improved guard which may be applied to a chisel so that when the chisel is out of use the cutting edge thereof is not contact with any object that might impair the edgesof the same. The said guard is formed of an integral piece of sheet steel, the elasticity of which issufficient when bent into the specific form of guard required to maintain the same upon'the tool to which itv may be applied.
a represents the body portion of'my improved guard and b the lip that surrounds or embraces the cutting edge of the chisel in such mannerthat the same cannot be eX- posed or pushed'into contact with any object until the guard is adjusted upon the shank of the chisel when the same is in use or to be used as hereinafter described; the
said body portion has laterally projecting members 0, d, the members 0 being bent vertical with reference to the body portion a and the members cl bent horizontal and parallel with the body portion a, forming a clamp adapted to engage over the edges of the chisel. The upper end of the body portion 6 projects outwardly somewhat from the edge of the chisel so thatwhen the said guard is secured on the chisel it is held thereon by the clamping members cl, 0? and c, c and is capable of being moved up and down the length of the chiselblade so as to permit the same to be readily used without detaching said guard. When the guard is used to protect the edge it is forced down until the lipb engages over the cutting edge of the tool. When it is desirable to move the guard upward to enable the chisel to be used, said guard is forced downward a short distance and the upper body portion 6 forced inward against the chisel, which throws the lip to the rear of thechisel so that the same can be moved upward, as shown in the drawings, freeing the cutting edge of the tool.
Having. described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent A guard for edged tools comprising a single piece of resilient metal, the lower end thereof terminating in a lip adapted to engage over and protect the edge of the tool,
and the upper edge terminating in an out-' wardly projecting blade adapted when pressed against the tool to throw the lower lip member, when out of engagement with the tool, to one side thereof, side members adapted to engage the sides of the tool for the purpose of holding the same movably thereon whereby the same may be positioned on the tool when the same is in use without being removed therefrom.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
