7 Claims. (Cl. 145-24 The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in guards for chisels to protect the cutting edge thereof when the chisel is not being used.
An important object of the invention is to provide a chisel guard in which the cutting edge of the chisel is firmly secured in a protected position and held from endwise as well as lateral movement.
Another object is to provide a channel-shaped guard in which the chisel is placed and equipped with an adjustable clamping or locking plate for the cutting edge of the chisel to lock the latter in the guard and to compensate for wear occasioned by the sharpening of the chisel.
A further object is to provide a restricted opening at the rear end of the channel-shaped guard formed with converging flanges at the sides of the guard and against which the shoulders at the rear of the chisel blade are clamped by the tightening of the locking plate.
A still further object is to provide a chisel guard of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which the same is intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view;

Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on a line 33 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a modified construction;
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on a line 5-5 of Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a top plan view of a further modification;
Figure 7 is a transverse sectional view taken on a line 77 of Figure 6;
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the modified locking plate;
Figure 9 is a perspective view of a still further modification;
Figure 10 is a top plan view thereof; and
Figure 11 is a fragmentary perspective view of still another modified construction.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, and first with respect to the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, the numeral 5 designates a channel-shaped guard of metal or other suitable material and formed with upstanding longitudinal flanges 6 and 7 at the sides of the guard and a transverse upstanding flange 8 at the front end thereof. The rear end of the guard is formed with converging upstanding flanges 9 and 10 having their converging ends spaced from each other to form a restricted opening 11.
A channel-shaped lining 12 of wood or other suitable relatively soft material is cemented or otherwise suitably secured in the guard and a locking plate 13 is slidably.
mounted in the front end of the channel of the lining and is formed with a longitudinal slot 14 to receive a bolt 01' nut 15 or other suitable fastening member which projects upwardly through the bottom of the guard and lining. A washer 16 is placed on the bolt on top of the locking plate 13 to cover the slot.
The lower rear portion of clamping plate 13 is beveled to form an overhanging lip 17 and the beveling is cut at diiferent angles to form a shoulder 18 at the underside of the overhang.
A chisel blade 19 is placed in the guard with beveled cutting edge 20 thereof inserted under the overhang 17 of locking plate 13 which is then locked to hold the shoulders 21 at the rear portion of the blade clamped against the converging flanges 9 and 10 at the rear of the guard and with the handle socket 22 of the chisel positioned in the restricted opening 11. The upstanding flanges 9 and 10 are inclined inwardly, as shown in Figure 2, to further restrict opening 11 at its upper portion to grip the handle socket 22.
The shoulder 18 of the overhang of the locking plate bears against the beveled cutting edge of the chisel at a point rearwardly of the sharpened tip of the chisel so that the tip is clear of any portion of the guard which might tend to dull the same.
In the modified construction illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, the channel-shaped guard is shown at and is open at its front end, and formed at its sides with upstanding flanges 31 and 32 having converging rear end portions 33 and 34 to provide a restricted opening 35 at the rear of the guard. A notch 46 is formed in the bottom of the guard at its rear end to facilitate bending inwardly of the rear end portions 33 and 34 of the flanges to increase restriction at the upper portion of the opening 35 to grip the handle socket of the chisel.
The bottom of the guard 30 is formed with a longitudinal slot 36 in which a bolt or nut or other suitable fastener 37 is slidable and which passes upwardly through a locking plate 38 and washer 39 for sliding forwardly and rearwardlyin the guard with the bolt and nut. A proctective plate or lining 40 is placed between the locking plate and the bottom of the guard and through which the bolt also passes for sliding therewith to keep the slot covered.
Locking plate 38 includes a rearwardly inclined overhang or lip 41 formed with a shoulder 42 at its underside for hearing against the bevel 43 at the cutting edge of a chisel 44 placed in the guard to lock the chisel therein and with the shoulders 45 at the rear of the blade of the chisel clamping against the converging rear flanges 33 and 34 of the guard.
In Figures 6 to 8, inclusive, the locking plate is formed at the free end of the overhang or lip 51 with a pair of spaced apart downwardly curved lips 52 forming a notch 53 between the lips in which the blade 54 of the chisel is received to prevent lateral movement thereof in the guard 55 when placed therein. Locking plate 50 is secured in slidably adjusted position in the guard by a bolt 56 to clamp the chisel therein as heretofore described. Opposing flanges 57 and '58 at the rear end of the guard also form a restricted opening 59 for the handle socket of the chisel and a notch 60 in the bottom of the guard facilities bending of the flanges to further restrict the opening.
In the modified construction illustrated in Figures 9 and 10, the rear of the channel-shaped guard 61 is provided with a clip 62 having a plate 63 at one end pivoted to the underside of the rear end portion of the guard by a rivet or the like 64 for swinging the clip laterally at one side of the guard into and out of clamping engagement with the handle socket 65 of a chisel 66. 61 is also provided with a chisel locking plate 67 secured in slidably adjusted position in the front end of the guard by a bolt 68. Opposing flanges 69 and 70 at the rear end of the guard form a restricted opening 71 for the handle socket.
In Fig. 11, the rear portions of the flanges 72 and '73 of the channel-shaped guard 74 are provided with inwardly pressed knobs 75- and 76 to frictionally bear against the chisel blade 77' to hold the same in the guard.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. Achisel guard for a chisel having a shank with rear shoulders and a handle portion comprising a channel member adapted to receive the chisel therein, and said channel member including an abutment at its rear end for engagement by the shoulders, and means at the front portion of said channel member lockably overlying the front end of the chisel and clamping the shoulders of the chisel against said abutment.
2. A chisel guard for a chisel having a shank with a beveled cutting edge forming a sharpened tip and inwardly extending shoulders at the rear side portionscomprising a channel member adapted to receive the chisel therein, a locking plate slidable in the member and having an overhang overlying the cutting edge of the chisel, and
- means securing the locking plate in longitudinal adjusted position with respect to the chisel, said overhang of the locking plate including a shoulder bearing against the bevel of the cutting edge to maintain the locking plate separated from the sharpened tip of the chisel.
3. A chisel guard comprising a channel member adapted to receive a chisel therein, a locking plate carried by the channel member and overlying the front end of the chisel to secure the chisel from endwise movement relative to the channel member, and a pair of downwardly projecting spaced apart lips on the locking plate between which the chisel is positioned to secure the latter against lateral movement.

A chisel guard for a chisel having a shank with rear shoulders. and a handle portion comprising a channel member adapted to receive the chisel therein, inwardly converging flanges at the rear end of the channel memher having a restricted opening therebetween and in which the. handle. portion of. the. chisel is engaged, with thev shoulders thereon abutting said flanges, and means at the front portion of said channel member lockably overlying the front end of the chisel and said means being longitudinally adjustable in the channel member to clamp the shoulders of the chisel against said flanges.
5. A chisel guard for a chisel having an elongated shank with a beveled cutting edge at one end and inwardly extending shoulders disposed remotely therefrom, said guard comprising an, elongated channel member, abutments at one end of said member for engagement with the shoulders of the chi'seliin one directioman adjustable locking plate, on said channel member in spaced relation to the abuments, said locking plate having a portion overlying the cutting edge of the chisel and engaging the bevelled portion thereof whereby the chisel may be clamped between the abutments and the locking plate.

A chisel guard for a chisel having a shank with rear shoulders and av handle portion comprising a channel member adapted: to receive the chisel; therein, and said channel member including. an abutment at its rear end for engagement by the shoulders, and means at the frontportion of said channel member lockably overlying the front end of the chisel and clamping the shoulders. of the, chisel against said" abutment, and a resilient. clip pivoted to the rear portion of said channel member and swingably laterally into and out of clamping engagement with the. rear portion of the chisel".
