PATENTEDJum I972 INVENTOR. F RANC/J 6. WEEKS SK] EDGE SHARPENER This invention relates to sharpening device, and more particularly to a ski sharpening device.
It is therefore the primary purpose of this invention to provide a ski edge sharpener which may be carried by the skier in order to enable him or her to sharpen the edges of their skiis when desired.
Another object of this invention is to provide a sharpener which will have an elongated body of plastic or wooden material in which is recessed a file blade, the file blade being held within the recessed area by means of end plates, the end plates being held to the body of the device by a bolt and wing nut fastener.
A further object of this invention is to provide a sharpener of the type described which when the file blade becomes worn out, it may be replaced with a new one by removing the end plates from the body of the device inorder to place a new file blade in place.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a sharpener device which will have a recessed portion extending the length of the body which will be of right angles in order to properly align the edge of the ski so that the sharpener will be drawn along the edge, thus sharpening the ski edge at the proper angle at all times.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a ski edge sharpener which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will be readily evident upon a study of the following specification and the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a horizontal front view of the present invention shown in elevation and partly broken away;
FIG. 2 is an end view of H6. 1 showing the fragmentary ski spaced away from the file blade of the device;
FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 1, but showing a modified form of the invention; and
FIG. 4 is an end view ofFlG. 3.
According to this invention, a ski edge sharpener is shown to include an elongated plastic or wood body 11 having a recessed groove 12 extending from one end to the other. A file blade 13 is positioned within groove 12 and is held firmly by means by means of the end plates 14 which are also of plastic or wood material. The end plates 14 are held to body ll of sharpener 10 by an elongated bolt 15 which receives a wing nut fastener 16, the wing nut fastener 16 providing a means for removing the end plates 14 in order to replace the file blade 13 when it becomes worn.
It shall be noted that the edge 17 of the recessed corner of sharpener 10 allows for the ski 18 to have its edge 19 to continuously engage the file blade 13 when sharpener 10 is drawn along the edge 19 of ski 18.
Looking now at FIGS. 3 and 4 of the drawing, one will see a modified form of sharpener 10' having a plastic or wooden body 11 similar to that the main embodiment of the present invention. A similar groove 12' as shown in the main embodi ment, provides retainment means for the file blade 13' which is held firmly in sharpener 10' by plastic end plates 14'. The ends plates 14' of sharpener 10 are fixedly secured to the ends of the body 11 thus making sharpener 10' a disposable article when the file blade 13' wears out. Sharpener 10' also includes an edge 20 for the placement of ski 18 in order that sharpener 10' may be drawn along the edge 19 of ski l8 uniformly and at right angles when edge 19 engages file blade 13'.
What I claim is:
l. A ski edge sharpener comprising an elongated body, a file blade carried by said body to sharpen the edge of skis, end plates carried by said body to provide a means of rendering the file blade stationary, fastening means for said end plates, one longitudinal corner of said body being recessed at right angles for aligning the ski edge in order that it may be sharpened by said file blade, said recessed corner receiving said file blade and the ends of said file blade abuttjn with said end plates, said end plates serving to render said ile blade stationary in order that said sharpener may be drawn along the edge of said ski to be sharpened, a longitudinal groove within an apex of said right angle comer, said groove extending the length of said body so that said file blade may be inserted into said groove from an end of said groove, said file in said groove having a portion of one file face thereof exposed in said right angle comer for engaging said ski edge, and a through-bolt extending longitudinally through said body and both said end plates for securement together, said through-bolt receiving a wing nut on its end.
