Description

ADJUSTABLE PARING AND SLICINGKNIFE Filed Aug. 4, 1953 Patented Aug. 28 1934 .UN-ITED STA PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to an adjustable paring and slicing knife, the general object of the invention being to provide a longitudinally extending opening in the rear part of .the blade of the knife,
: with means for supporting a razor blade or other blade in an inclined position on the main blade with its beveled edge passing through the opening.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describingthe invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side View of the improved knife.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the guard or clamp removed.
Figure 3 is a similar view with both the blade and clamp removed.
Figure 4 is a section on line 44 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a view of the clamp or guard.
In this drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the handle of the knife and the numeral 2 the blade thereof, which is preferably of the shape shown with its beveled edge substantially straight, as shown at 3. The major portion of the inner part of the blade is of substantially rectangular shape, as shown at 4, with one edge extending beyond the beveled edge 3 and its other edge extends upwardly and forwardly, as shown at 5. A plate-like member 6 has its upper edge connected to the up- ,7 per edge of this part 5 and its lower edge is connected to the part 4 at the upper edge of an elongated opening or slot 7 formed in said part, this upper edge or wall of the opening being beveled to conform to the inclined upper or outer face of the ,40 plate member 6. The ends of the member 6 are turned up slightly, as shown at 8, at the lower portion of said member and each end is formed with a projection 9 which is spaced from the turned-up part 8. These parts are adapted to receive the notched end of a safety razor blade 10, as shown in Figure 2, the notches of which are shown at 11. The cutting edge of the blade will extend slightly through the opening 7, as shown in Figure 4, and the clamping plate 12 holds the blade in position and has its major part fitting over the blade, with its curved upper edge 13 fitting over the upper edges of the parts 5 and 6 and said curved edge has a spring tongue 14 depending therefrom which passes through a slot 15 formed at the junction of the members 5 and 6, this slot being of less length than the length of these two parts. The member 12 is of resilient material so that when in place, it will press the blade upon the member 6 and thus hold it in place which the notches 11 of the blade engaging the parts 9 when the blade is to project but a slight extent into the opening 7, but when the blade is to project a considerable extent, the notches will engage the parts 8. Thus the blade can be adjusted in position and the member 10 will hold it in place.
Slits 16 are formed in the ends of the part 4 for receiving the end parts of the blade when the blade is in place.
Thus I have provided simple means whereby a safety razor blade or the like can be used on the blade of a knife for paring purposes when the blade is in its upper position, as shown in Figure 2, or for slicing purposes, when the blade is in a lowered position. The cutting edge 3 of the blade 2 can be used in the ordinary manner.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:--
1. A device of the class described comprising a blade, a handle, said blade having an enlarged portion adjacent the handle having a longitudinally extending slot therein, the lower wall of the slot being slightly spaced fro-m and paralleling the lower edge of the enlarged portion, the rear edge of the enlarged part extending upwardly and forwardly, a diagonally arranged plate-like member having one edge connected to the upper edge of said upwardly and forwardly extending portion and its other edge connected to the enlarged part at the upper edge or wall of the slot, the junction of the upper edge of the plate-like member with the upper edge of the upwardly and forwardly extending portion forming a rounded enlargement and the upper portion of said upwardly and forwardly extending part having a longitudinally extending slot therein, a safety razor blade, resting on the outer face of the platelike member, and a clamping member fitting over the blade and having a curved upper edge fitting over the rounded enlargement and provided with a tongue for fitting in the slot in the upper portion of the upwardly and forwardly extending part.
2. A device of the class described comprising a blade, a handle, said blade having an enlarged portion adjacent the handle having a longitudinally extending slot therein, the lower wall of the slot being slightly spaced from and paralleling the lower edge of the enlarged portion, the rear edge of the enlarged part extending upwardly and forwardly, a diagonally arranged plate-like member having one edge connected to the upper edge of said upwardly and forwardly extending portion and its other edge connected to the enlarged part at the upper edge or wall of the slot, the junction of the upper edge of the plate-like member with the upper edge of the upwardly and forwardly extending portion ferming a rounded enlargement and the upper portion of said upwardly and forwardly extending part having a longitudinally extending slot therein, a safety razor blade resting on the outer face of the plate-like member, a clamping member fitting over the blade and having a curved upper edge fitting over the rounded enlargement and provided with a tongue for fitting in the slot in the upper portion of the upwardly and forwardly extending Dart, a pair of spaced projections at each end of the plate-like member and the razor blade having a notch in each end for engaging either one of said projections, whereby the razor blade can be adjusted on the plate-like member.
