The chisel guard 10 generally includes an elongated channel-shaped member 22 having side flanges 24 and a central bight portion 26. The bight portion 26 is provided with an elongated slot 28 for receiving: a screw fastener 39 in longitudinally adjusted position for securing an insert 32 which may be constructed of wood or plastic or any other soft material which will receive and protect the cutting edge 20 of the chisel 12.. The insert is provided with an aperture 34 for receiving the fastener 30 and one end of the insert 32 is provided with a V-shaped notch 36 extending inwardly, and the lower leg of the notch is provided with an inclined upper surface 38 which forms a guide for the insertion of the cutting edge 20 of the chisel 12 into the chisel guard It), and more specifically, into the V-shaped notch 36. The end of the channel-shaped member 22. remote from the insert 32 is provided with inturned side flanges 40 which terminate in concave edges 42 for engaging and gripping the shank 16 of the chisel 12. Due to the inherent resiliency of the material from which the channel-shaped member 22 is constructed, the flanges 40 will frictionally retain the chisel 12 within the channel-shaped member 22. Also, it will be understood that the angular relation of the inturned flanges 40 may be varied for receiving and clampingly gripping chisels having various sized shanks 16.
Slidably received on and encircling the channel member 22 is a closed loop or strap generally designated by the numeral 44 and including a central opening an equal in cross-sectional area to the cross-sectional area of the channel-shaped member 22 for longitudinal sliding move ment thereon. The loop 44 is closed by a reverse bent crimp 48 wherein the loop 44 may be positioned in encircling relation to the channel member 22 and the end of the blade 18 adjacent the shank 16 of the chisel The bight portion 26 of the channel member 22 is provided with a spring detent 50 adjacent the end thereof together with a depending portion 52 on the end thereot' for locating the loop 44 in relation to the channel member 22 for assuring that the loop 44 will retain the chisel 2 in the channel member 22, thereby retaining the chisel guard 10 on the chisel 12.
Figures 5 and 6 illustrate a modified form of insert 54 wherein the front edge thereof is provided with an inwar-dly extending bore 56 formed by side members 58 wherein the bore 56 will receive a chisel having a relatively small blade and cutting edge. The side members 58 form afour-"sided bore 56 for protecting the cutting edge of the chisel'on all sides. The insert 54 is also provided with a forwardly and outwardly extending lower leg 6% having an inclined upper surface forming a guide for the inwardly extending bore 56-that a1so:ha a-downwardly sloping top wall wherein the bore 56 is generally .'-shaped, as shown in Figure 6.
Referring now specific-allyto Figures 7 and 8,-it'will be seen that the numeral '62 generally designates a modified form of chisel. guard the present invention wherein the channel-shaped *m'ember is provided with spaced hinge barrel membcr do on one edge thereof for pivotally receiving a closure member '68 having a hinge barrel Fil on edge theszeof and ahinge pin '72 extending through the hinge barrels 66 and "79 when they are aligned, thereby pi-vo'tally securing the closure member till to the channel-shaped member 6 Theedgeof the member as remote from the hinge barrel '70 is pro vided with depending lip i l-having a concave recess 76 lllui'fiifi for spring engagcmcnt-with'a projecting longitudinal tie-tent 37.8 on the edge of =the channel-shaped member 64 remote from the hinge barrel 66. Dther than the structure specifically set forth above, the chiselguard 62 is identical. in construction to the chisel guard 10 as illustrated in Figures 1-4.
