To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RicimnnJ. Enwixnns, of Galena, in the county of Jo Daviess and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scraper Attachments for Shovels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to scraper attachments for shovels, and is designed particularly as an improvement on the construction disclosed in my U. S. Patent 475,208 granted to me May 17th, 1892.

In the patented construction the spring clasp for holding the scraper, is attached to the cylindrical portion of the handle adjacent to hand hold, with its free end pointing toward the latter, so that when the scraper is in position it rests with its handle portion under the spring, and its blade on the flat portion of the hand held. As the blade portion of the scraper is flat, and the handle curved to conform to the contour of the cylindrical portion of handle, the shoulders on the scraper at the junction of the flat blade and curved handle portion, engage the lower curved end of the hand hold and obstruct the free withdrawal of the scraper. Again the withdrawal movement of the scraper is toward the hand, hence in order to remove the scraper it is necessary to release the hand hold and grasp the cylindrical portion of the handle between the shovel blade and the spring clip.

The object of my present invention is to provide a scraper attachment for spades, shovels and similar tools, that can be readily and quickly removed and replaced without removing the hand from the hand hold of the shovel, and which when in place will not interfere with the free use of the shovel or interfere with 01' discommode the workman.

lVith these objects in view my invention. consists in the details of construction as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a shovel showing my attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section taken through the handle and scraper and looking toward Fig. 3 is a view in longitudinal section and Fig. 4 is a view of the scraper detached.

1 represents the handle of a shovel or similar tool and 2 the hand held thereof. Secured to the Hat portion of the hand held 2 is the spring clasp 3, which is preferably triangular in shape, and provided intermediate its ends and nearer its fixed end with a bend 4, which elevates the clip for the reception of the blade of the scraper and throws the free end of the clip down toward the flat face of the hand hold 2. This clip 3 is secured at its wider end to the hand held 2, with its free end pointing toward the shovel blade, but terminating on the hand held proper, and is provided near its free end on its inner face with a lug 5 formed by indenting the outer face of the clip. The extreme free end of the clip is turned outwardly to enable it to be grasped by the finger and drawn away from the scraper, thus leaving the latter free to be withdrawn.

The scraper blade 6 is provided with a hole 7 in which the lug 5 rests when the scraper is in place. The blade 6 of the scraper is slightly curved transversely, while the handle 8 thereof is curved to conform to the contour of the cylindrical portion of the handle so as to rest snugly thereon without interfering with the free movements of the hands of the workman.

Then the scraper is in place, the blade portion thereof rests approximately flat on the flat surface of the hand held 2 immediately under the spring, while the thin curved handle snugly embraces the cylindrical handle, and can be grasped by the workman, or the hand of the atter can move over the same, while handling the shovel, without danger of cutting the hand or inconveniencing the workman in the slightest.

The scraper is withdrawn in a direction away from the hand held, consequently it is not necessary to release the latter, and grasp it below the scraper in order to withdraw the latter. Again the scraper is drawn in a direction away from the shoulders at the juncture of the hand hold and cylindrical portion of the handle, hence it is not necessary to elevate the handle end of the scraper, in order to remove it from the shovel.

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:-

1. The combination with a shovel, of a spring clasp secured to the flat surface of the hand held with its fixed end adjacent to the hand held, and a scraper comprising a blade adapted to rest in contact With the I flat surface of the hand hold, and a curved handle adapted to closely fit the cylindrical portion of the shovel handle.

2. The combination With a shovel, of a spring clasp approximately triangular in shape and secured at its Wider end to the flat face of the hand hold, the free end of the clasp pointing away from the hand hold, and a scraper comprising a blade and a handle, the former resting on the flat face of the hand hold under and engaged by the spring clasp and the handle curved to conform to the contour of the shovel handle.
