' ToaZZwhom tt'mag rconcern:
' DOOR-HOLDER Be it :known that I, MELvILLE J12, a citizen of the United at Atlanta, inthe county ;of Fulton and State of Georgiaphave invented new and,
useful Improvements in Door-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates'to door holders and more particularly to a spring operated device adapted to be positioned upon the floor and to en age or catch the doorwhenthe p 8..slight-ly curved downwardly so that the outwardly projecting endof said plate will b latter is swung open.
An object of my invention is to provide a device of the foregoing nature which shall be simple in construction and easily and quickly operated.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the foregoing nature which may be operated in order to release a door by the simple pressure of the foot.
- With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention consists in such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which,
Figure l is a view in elevation of my de vice showing the door in locked position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of myinvention.
In reducing my invention to practice I provide a single strip of sheet metal which is bent upon itself approximately interme diate its ends to provide a base plate 1, hav ing' apertures near one end thereof adapted to receive screws 2 or other fastening de vices adapted to enter the floor 3 and hold my device in position. The base plate 1 is of suitable size and shape and should be of an elongated nature as shown. A clamping plate 5 extends at an angle to or is inclined relatively to the base-plate l and is provided approximately midway its length with a depression 5 of suflicient width to receive the bottom edge of the door 6 and rendered of suflicient depth to firmly and positively hold said door upon both sides thereof by means of the side walls provided as shown in Fig. I. Said inclined clamping plate 4 leads to one wall of the depression which wall is lower than the other wall of the de- I Specification of Letters Patent. I
.press ion, so; thatas. the door :moves over .the
the base-plate will spring upwardly :and its Extending 'hor-. f iZ-ontal-ly from :said deeper .side'nand vnor mally arranged in parallel relation with the depression receive {the door.
base plate is the foot plate -7' having its end not readily engage the sole of a shoe or any portions of wearing apparel that may come into engagement therewith. I desire to lay great stress upon the formation of the foot plate as the form illustrated in the drawings renders my device more practicable andeflicient than would otherwise be the case and at the same time adds nothing to its cost of manufacture. I
Immediately below the foot plate 7 and near the deeper side of the depression 5 is a block, or abutment member 9 which is disposed beneath said plate to act as a stop so as to prevent'the lower surface of the depression 5 from being forced into engage ment with the base plate 1 when the door is to be released thus preventing said de pression from being bent out of shape and consequently rendered inefficient. This is another feature of my invention which is desired to be emphasized.
The operation of my device will be readily apparent from the foregoing. It will be seen that when the door 6 is swung open it will pass over thesurface of the clamping plate 4 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. Coming in contact with the plate 4 it will gradually force said plate downwardly until it registers with the depression 5. The spring action will cause the depression to bear against the bottom edge and sides of the door as illustrated, thus locking said door securely in position until the same is released by the pressure of thefoot upon the plate 7 or end 8.
I desire it to be understood that slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement of the several parts may be resorted to, at will without departing from the spirit of my invention provided such changes fall within the scope of theappended claims.

' MELVILLE FATHERREE, J R.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
1. A door holder comprising a base plate, a clamping plate formed integral with said base plate and arranged in an acute angle thereto, a depression provided at the extremity of said clamping late, the bottom of said depression normal y lying parallel with said base plate, a foot plate extending from said depression normallylying parallel with said base plate, and an abutment member disposed between said foot plate and said base'plate. r t
