CARPET-FASTENING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,911, dated September 12, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELMORE D. BERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouya-hoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The invention is designed, primarily, to be used to fasten carpets or rugs to floors; but it is capable of use fora variety of analogous purposesas, for example, for fastening wagon-covers, tents or awnings, wagon-curtains, disc.

The invention consists of two coacting thin metal plates, one adapted for fastening to the floor and having an integral raised pocket and a hole just in front of the opening to said pocket and the other adapted for attachment to the rug or carpet and having a raised border and a depressed middle part, which is provided with a tongue still further depressed and having in front of said tongue a hole through which the pocket may project, and it also consists in the more specific combination of parts described and claimed herein.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal central vertical section showing the device when in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the plate B. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the plate A, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the component parts of the device attached and in readiness for use.

Just in front of this open end a hole a is cut through the plate to facilitate the entrance of said tongue into said pocket.

B represents the plate which is intended to be made fast to the rug or carpet by means of threads passing through holes b in the raised margin 12 of said plate. The middle part Z) of said plate is bent downward a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the metal. This part of the plate contacts with the plate A when the parts are clasped together, wherefore the raised margin b is- A portion of the middle part of the plate Bis cut away, as at 1), thereby forming the tongue 1), which remains attached at one end only to the plate. The hole in the plate in front of the tongue is large enough to permit the pocket to pass through it, and the tongue is bent downward below the level of the middle of plate B far enough to permit it to enter the mouth of the pocket. This plate is made of spring metal, and the tongue consequently has some spring action. A recess 6 is pressed into the top of the tongue, and a projection pressed down from the top of the pocket is adapted to enter the recess when the parts are clasped, thereby preventing the accidental separation of the plates.

It will be observed from the drawings and the foregoing description that when the plates are clasped together the top surfaces of the plate B and of pocket aare in approximately the same plane, and the lower surfaces of the tongue and of plate A are also in approximately the same plane. It follows,therefore, that the device will not beinjured if aheavy piece of furniture is rolled over the device or if it is subjected from above to any other kind of pressure.

Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A fastening device consisting of two coacting thin metal plates A and 13 adapted respectively to be fastened to the floor and to a rug or other analogous objects, the plate A having an upwardly-bent pocket at open at one end and a hole in front of the opening to said pocket, and holes near its edge for fastening it to the floor, and the plate B having a raised border 6 or edge in which are holes for attaching it to the rug, and a depressed middle partb a depressed tongue, and a hole through said middle part at the sides and front end of said tongue, substantially as specified.
