Description

Patented July 27, 1926.
PATENT OFFICE.
WOLF T. GOLDSMITH, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
FOOT-MEASURE.
Application f led. December 11, 1925. Serial No. 74,843.
This invention relates to an improved foot measure and has for an object to provide a construction which may be readily used when resting on a support or may be placed against the foot while suspended in the air and caused to function properly in either position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a foot rest for use by footwear salesmen wherein an adjustable stop is provided formed to remain in any position in which it is left.
A further object, more specifically, is to provide a foot measure wherein overhanging flanges are provided which interlock with coacting flanges or webs and an automatic locking member for pinching these parts together so as to lock the respective parts against accidental movement.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a top plan view of a foot measure disclosing an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view through Figure 1, on line 22.
Figure 3 is an end view of the structure shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1 is an end view of the structure shown in Figure 1 looking at the same. from the opposite direction to that shown in Figure 3. I
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of measure to that shown in Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a sectional view through Figure 5 on line 6-6.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a body which is made preferably from flat metal and provided with a groove 2 in its upper surface extending from one end to near the opposite end. In forming the body 1 and groove 2, overhanging flanges 8 and 4 are also providcd which face each other and which accommodate the laterally projecting flanges or beads 5 and 6 formed preferably integral with the stop or abutment 7. The stop or abutment 7 is preferably made from metal, as for instance, aluminum and provided with a solid portion 8 in which a bore 9 is formed, said bore accommodating the spring 10 and a ball 11. The ball 11 presses downwardly against the body 1 in the bottom of groove 2 except when it is positioned in the depression 12. This depression is provided with an abrupt end 13 and an inclined section or portion 14 whereby the ball 11 may freely enter and leave one side of the depression but cannot move over the end or wall 13.
In case at any time it should be desired to remove the abutment 7 from the body 1, a thin piece of metal is placed over the depression 12 and then the parts may be readily moved over the depression and finally out of engagement with the flanges 3 and 4-. A stationary or fixed stop or abutment 15 is provided at the end of body 1 and extends at right angles thereto for a short distance. When in use, the abutment 7 is moved toward and from the abutment 15. On the upper surface of body 1 are arranged graduations 16 and 17, said graduations giving forth any desired information, as for instance, inches and also sizes of footwear.
In Figures 5 and 6, a modified form of the invention is shown. Referring to these. figures, 18 and 19 indicate side grooves in the body 1, said side grooves accommodating the inturned flanges 20 and 21 formed on the abutment or stop 7 In this form of the invention, there is no groove 2 and, consequently, the ball operates on the upper face of the body 1 except when it is in the depression 12. In this form of the invention, as well as in the preferred form. the end opposite the abutment 15 is formed round and provided with a hole or aperture 22 whereby the device may be hung on a nail or other support. In both forms of the invention, the abutment 7 is moved back and forth as desired to secure the desired measurement of the foot and this action may take place when the foot is suspended in the air or when the device is resting on a support or foot rest. The sliding movement is freely permitted as no part of the abutments 7 and 7 extend beneath the body 1.
hat I claim isr 1. In a foot measure of the character described, a body formed with a notch near one end, an abutment carried by the body formed with a bore facing the body, a spring arranged in said bore, and a ball normally arranged in said bore and acted upon by said spring for forcing the said ball from the bore whereby when the abutment is opposite said notch most of said ball will be in the notch whereby the movement of the abutment is limited in one direction.
2. A foot measure, comprising a body formed with a pair of flanges, a slidin abutment carried by said body and formed an inclined bottom merging into the upper.
surface of the body and an end Wall extending almost at right angles to the upper surface of the body, said abutment being provided with a bore, a spring airangedin said bore, and a ballnormally arranged in said here, said spring and ball acting to normally 10 cause the flanges on the abutment to pinch against the flanges on the body, said ball being adaptedto. move into said notch and engage said Wall When the abutment has been'moved to its extreme position in one 15 direction.
