Description

Aug. 30, 1932. E. J. MURPHY PLUMB BOB HANGER Filed Oct. 1, 1930 INVENTOR "l'dwarfl 17114277751 ATTORNEYy Patented Aug. 30, 1932 UETE star rare PLUMB BOB Banana Application fi1ed October 1, 1930. Serial No. 485,718.

My invention relates to a device for quickly securing a plumb bob line to a wall, ceiling, or other similar body from which it may be desirable to suspend the bob.

Primarily the invention has for an object to provide such an article which is inexpensive, simple and may be used to secure a plumb bob line without employing a hammer and nails.

Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.

To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, the invention still further resides in the novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described in the following detailed description, then be particularly pointed out in the appended. claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the invention applied to a vertical wall or support.

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the same applied to a ceiling or horizontal support.

Figure 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a vertical section on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.

In the drawing, in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, 1 represents the hanger which consists of a body having a front face 2 and a back face 3, from which back face there projects a pin or point 4 that is adapted to be pressed into the wall or support 13 to which the plumb bob line is to be secured.

The body 1 is provided with a diagonal hole 5 extending from the front face 2 at one side of the axis of the pin 4 to the back face 3 at the other side of such axis, thereby defining edges 6, 7 and 8 over which the plumb bob line 9 passes in going through the opening 5. 10 is the plumb bob which is secured to the free end of the line 9, the other end of which is wound, as at 11, on a stick 12 according to the usual practice.

It will be noted that the back face 3 is flat and the pin or point 4 projects at right angles thereto. When the hanger is pressed into a.

vertical support 13 as shown in Figures 1 and 3, the plumb bob line 9 lies over the corners 7 and 8 and is caught as at 14 between the body 1 and the support 13 Where it is held by retaining friction.

When the hanger is secured to a ceiling or horizontal support the line 9 passes over the corners 7 and 6 and is held between the body 1 and the support 13 by retaining friction.

It will be seen from the foregoing that it is a simple matter to secure the plumb bob line to a Vertical or horizontal support with the plumb bob at any desired distance from the hanger since when the hanger is not pinned to the support the plumb bob line 66 be passed freely through the aperture 5.

When the hanger is removed from the support which is easily done with the fingers, it is dropped and slides down to the plumb bob, the hole 5 being large enough to allow for any knots that might be in'the line to pass through it. The hole is drilled on a slant and is not located in the center of the bottom face but is so situated as to allow for the line to hang substantially from the center of the face when secured to a horizontal support.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought the complete construction, operation and advantages of my invention will be clear to those skilled in the art to which it relates.

What I claim is:

1. A plumb bob hanger comprising a body having a front and a back face, the back face being fiat, a securing point projecting from said back face, said body having an aperture through it from the front face to the back face, the axis of the aperture being inclined to the axis of said securing point.

2. In combination with a plumb bob line, a plumb bob on one end thereof, and a hanger having an aperture slidably receiving the line for purposes of adjustment before the hanger is secured to a support, said hanger comprising a body having a flat face and a securing point projecting from said flat face for holding the hanger to a suitable support with the bob line caught between the face and the support.

3. In combination with a plumb bob line, a plumb bob on one end thereof, and a hanger slidably located on the line, said hanger comprising a body having a flat face and a secur ing point projecting from said fiat face for holding the hanger to a suitable support with the bob line caught between the face and the support, said body having an aperture passing through it inclined to the axis of the securing point through which aperture the line slidably passes for purposes of adjustment before the hanger is secured to a support. v
