Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 25, 1914.
To NZZ whom if; may concern Be itlnown that I, BENNO VOM EIGEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New-urli, in the county of Essex and State 1 of New Jersey, have invented certain new and 'useful lmmovernents in Match-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to `which it appertains to malte and use the same, reference beinghad tothe accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. i
. This invention has reference, generally, to improvements in the art pertaining to the construction of inatclrboxes, and, the invention relates, more particularly, to a `novel construction of match-box, with a view of simplifying the general construction of the match-box, and, at the same time, facilitating the assembling of the various parts of:
the match-bex. i
The invention, therefore, has for its` general purpose to provide a matchbox construction. with the above stated objects in view,`and to generally simplify and cheapen the cost of manufacture of the same.`
Other objects of the invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the .following d etailed description of the said invention.
l/Vith the various objects of the present invention in view, the invention consists, primarily, in the novel matchbox hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be more fully described in the following specilication, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of this speciiication.
rlfhe invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sideelevation of a inatch-` bei; made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention; Fig. 2 is a tepedge view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the match-box. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section of the match-box, said section being 'taken on line lc-4 in saidliig. 3, looking in` the direction of the arrow ai; and Fig. 5 is a `horizontal section taken on line 5-5 in said Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow y. A Fig.` G is a collective perspective view of the various parts of the matchbox, showing said parts in their dismisembled re lations, prior to being put together to produce the complete match-box.
Similar characters of reference are enrployed in the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
.Referring new to the said drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates the main .shell or casing of the match-befr, the same being made of sheet-metal suitably ornamented, and in the .forni of a book, comprising the two side-plates 2 `and 3, joined together by a back-edge member 4l. At the edges, where the respective side-plates f2 and 3 are connected with the bacleedge member et, `the metal is suitably curved, as at 5 and` (i, see Figs. E2, 5 and G of the drawings, so as to provide within the said main shell er casing a pair of channels or guiding retaining portiens 7 and 8 for the purposes to be presently set forth. Referringto Fig. @of the draw-` ings, for the salie ofclearness, the member el will hereinafter be called the back, and the.
open spaces S), 10 and 11 located between the respective edgeportions of the side-plates 2 and `3, will hereinafter, respectively, be
i called the top, the front, and, the bottom.
Suitably located in the said front, and near tlie'marginal edges of the said sidesplates 2 and, is a closing plate-like member, as l2, which is formed with a pair of marginal flanges 13 from which extend suitably dis posed lugs or projections, as 14C. Extending upwardly and outwardly frein the upper end-portion of said plate-like member' 12 is a hook-shaped holding or retaining member 15, and projecting at right anglesifrom `the lower end-portion of said plate-lilac member 12 is another plate-like member, as 16, which is also formed with margnnil` flanges, as 17,
and an arrangement of cut-away parts 18 i and 19, forming lugareceiving` recesses for the `purposes herein-after more fully stated. Having properly arranged the` said platelike member 1Q. in the front, and theplatelike member 1li in the bottom, between the two side-plates?. and 23, these parte are permanentlysecured in place by means of the application of solder 20 between the said lugs or projections 14 and the [langes 17,
and the inner tace-portions of the said sidemembers or plates 2 and 3, substantially as indicated in Figs. 3, 4t and 5 of the drawings. From an inspection of said Figs. 3 and it will also be seen, that the said plate-like member 1G, when inserted in place, is located slightly away from the marginal edges of the bottom between said side- plates 2 and 3, and, furthermore, that the said member 16 is shorter than the widths ot said sideplates 2 and 3, so that a space is left between the end-edge 21 of said member 1G and the lower' inner surface-portion of the back former by the back-edge member 11. Slipped into the channels or guiding retaining portions 7 and 8, so as to be held and disposed upon the inner face ot the said back, is another plate-like member 22, said member being provided at its upper end with a pair of perforated marginal pintle-receiving lugs or ears 23, and also with a pair of marginal guide-lugs 2i, and another pair of springretaining lugs 25. Secured upon the faceportion 26 of said plate-like member 22, by means of said retaining lugs 25, is a springplate 27, movable at its upper' end-portion between the said guide-lugs 241, said springplate being also formed upon said upper end-portion with an upwardly extending angular tongue-like member 28. Rotatably connected with and mounted between the said pintle-receiving lugs or ears 23 is a pintle 29 upon which is suitablyY mounted the angular portion 31 of a hinge-plate 30, said plate 30 having a part 32 extending downwardly and upwardly, and then slightly outwardly, as at- 33, whereby a suitable hinge-lug is provided which is in slidable engagement with the angular tonguelike member 28 of the spring-plate 27, and the action of which is to maintain the said hinge-plate 30, forming the lid of the matchbox, in either its closed or opened relation, as will be clearly understood. Upon its lower end-portion, the said plate-like member 22 is formed with an inwardly projecting right-angled portion 3d, which extends into the bottom between the said side- plates 2 and 3, in the same plane with the plane of the prcviously-mentioned plate-like member 16, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. 'I`he said right-angled portion 3st is also made with marginal cut-away portions, as 35.
As soon as the various parts hereinbefore described have been brought into proper relative positions between the two side- plates 2 and 3, a plate-like member 36 is placed in the bottom between said side-plates, so as to be mounted upon the horizontally alined plate-like member 16 and the rightangled portion 34, the said plate-like member 3G being Jformed at its one end with marginal extensions 3T which correspond to the inner contour of and are iitted in the previously-mentioned channels or guiding retaining portions 7 and 8, said plate-like member 36 being also provided with suitably disposed and upwardly projecting fastening lugs 3S. The said lugs 38 are inserted through the various lug-receiving recesses 18 and 19 of the plate-like member 16, and through the marginal cut-away portions 35 of the right-angled portion 34, and then bent over upon the said parts, as shown in said Figs. 3, 4 and 5 of the drawings, whereby the match-box construction is completed and the assembled parts, between the said side- plates 2 and 3, are positively held in `place against displacement. The said plate-like member 36 is also made with a hookshaped end-portion 39, which, with the hook-shaped retaining member 15 of the pl ate-like member 12, is brought down over the stepped ends 41 of a scratching medium 40 arranged upon a backing 4t2, and is thus suit-ably disposed in the front ot the completed match-box, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawings.
I am aware, that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specitication and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Hence, I do not limit myself to the exact details of the general arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details ot the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
