This invention relates to display boxes for wrist watches and the like banded articles.
An object of this invention is to provide a box of the character described comprising a case, a cover hinged thereto, a holder for a wrist watch or other banded article in the case-and normally resting on the bottom of the case when the case is closed, and means to tilt the holder upwardly to an inclined display position, upon lifting up the cover.
Another object of this invention is to provide a box of the character described, in which the holder has a rearwardly extending arm passing through a slot in the rear wall of case and said cover having means at the inside of its rear end to engage said arm and push it down whereby to tilt the front end of the holder upwardly to an inclined display position as the-cover is swung open, and to allow the holder to drop down to the bottom of the case when the cover is lowered and closed.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a box of the character described in which said rearwardly extending arm on the holder has an upwardly extending lug to engage the rear wall of the case and rearward movement of the holder, and said arm being further formed with means to latch said arm to the case and prevent said holder .from being pulled out of said case.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a strong, rugged and durable box of the character described which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, attractive in appearance, and practical and eflicient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrange ment of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and of whichr-the scope of invention will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings in which is shown an illustrative embodiment of this invention:
FIG. 1 is a top plan View of the case which comprises part of the box embodying the invention;
FIG. 2 is a partial bottom plan view of the cover for said case;
FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the box, with the holder tilted up and the cover opened up, taken on line 44 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 5 is a partial view of the rear of the case on plane 5-5 of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 6 is a top view of the holder removed from the box.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, 10 designates a box embodying the invention, for displaying wrist watches and the like banded articles.
Said box 10 comprises generaly a case 11, a cover 12 hinged thereto, and a holder 13 for a wrist watch or other banded article, within the case. The case 11, cover 12 and holder 13 may be made as injection moldings of synthetic plastic material.
Case 11 has a bottom wall -15, a front wall 16, side r 3,005,541 Patented Oct. 24, 1961 walls 17 and a rear wall 18. The front wall 16 inclines forwardly and upwardly, as shown in FIG. 4. Extending from said front wall is a forwardly and downwardly inclined decorative apron .19. Extending up from the bottom wall 15, adjacent said front wall 16 are a pair of spaced, aligned, vertical walls 20 spaced from thickened wall portion 21 of the front wall, forming therewith slots. 22 to receive the lower end of a display card or piece of advertisement, and to hold same in an upright position. Extending rearwardly from walls 20 are lugs 23 spaced above bottom wall 1 1.
A pad 24v may be placed on the bottom wall, with its front end tucked under said lugs 23 to hold the pad down.
The side walls 17 have outwardly and downwardly inclined aprons 26 connected to the front apron 19.
Said side walls 17, adjacent their rear ends are formed with aligned through, bearing openings 27 about halfway down. Said side walls 17 are also provided with aligned outwardly extending bumps 28 at their outer sides, somewhat above and somewhat forwardly of holes 27.
Rear wall 18 slants upwardly and rearwardly and is formed centrally thereof, and just above bottom wall 15, with a. horizontal slot 30. Said rear wall 18 is also formed atits upper end with a central horizontal notch or slot 31 coextensive with slot 30 and disposed thereabove.
Holder 13 may be made of resilient synthetic plastic. The same comprises a central rear wall 40 from the opposite sides of which extend forwardly resilient wings 41 having concavely curved walls 42. The inner ends 43 of curved walls 42 are spaced apart. At the lower ends of wings 42, adjacent ends 43, are outwardly extending ledges 44.
Extending rearwardly from the lower end of central portion 40 is a horizontal arm 45 formed with a central V-shaped notch 46. Said arm 45 has side edges 47. At the rear ends of side edges 47 are outwardly-extending inclined teeth '48. The notch 46 divides arm 45 into two similar, symmetrical portions 50 which curve rearwardly and upwardly. I
Sai portions 50 are formed with intermediate aligned upstanding transverse lugs 52.
- ,When the box is closed (or if the cover 12 is not on the case 11) holder 13 rests on the pad 24. The arm 45 may be pushed rearwardly throngh slot 30. Teeth 48' click past the outer ends of slot 30, and lugs 52 contact the rear wall *18 above slot 30. The teeth 48 latch the holder to the case. Portions 50 of arm 45 flex to allow the'teeth 48 to press past the slot 30.
The cover 12 comprises a top wall 60 from which extend a front wall 61, side walls 62 and a rear wall 63'. Front wall 61 is slanted downwardly and forwardly. The side walls 62 slant downwardly and outwardly. At the rear ends of side walls 62 are downwardly extending ears 65 straddling the outer rear portions of side walls 17 of the case. The rear ends of side walls 17 are recessed inwardly as at 17a. It is these wall portions 17:: which are formed with the bearing openings 27 and bumps 28. The forward portions of side walls 62 and the front wall 61 may rest on top edges of side walls 17 and front wall 16, respectively. The rear ends of side walls 62 and ears 65 are offset outwardly somewhat, as shown in FIG. 2, to receive the rear end of the case.
Said cars 65 are formed, at their inner sides, with inwardly extending pivot pins 68 having annular shoulders 69 at their outer ends. Also, said ears 65 are provided, above plus 68 and somewhat forwardly thereof, with inwardly extending bumps 70. The pins 68 pass through bearing openings 27 to hinge the cover 12 to the case 11. The annular shoulders 69 act as washers. The bumps 70 on the cover clickpast the bumps 28 on the case, upon swinging the cover up, to hold the cover in open position. Rear wall 63 extends down the same extent as cars 65.
When the cover is in closed position on the case, the reanwall 63 of the cover is in vertical position. Extending down from the central portion'of top wall 60 is a wall or web 75 parallel to the rear wall 63 butterminating short of the lower end of said rear wall.
Wall 75 is connected to the rear wall 63 by side walls 76 having downwardly and rearwardly inclined edges 77 (when cover is closed), spaced from the lower edge of the rear wall 63. Walls 75, 76, 63 form a slot or cavity 78, The lower edge 75a of wall 75 is spaced above and close to arm 45 of the holder when the cover is closed.
However, when the cover is swung up, said lower edge 75a will engage the outer ends of arm portions 50, and will swing the holder up to the inclined position shown shown in FIG. 4.
During such movement, the outer ends of arm portions 50 enter slot or cavity 78. The holder 13 will about the rear end of pad 24, or rear edge of bottom wall 15 (as slot 30. The wrist watch or other banded article may be placed on the holder surrounding central portion 40 and spring wings 4 1, and rests on lugs 44 and arm 45.
When'the cover is closed, the holder comes down by gravity to the pad 24 and bottom wall 15. During closing movement of the cover, the lower ends of walls 75, 76 willmove'throug'h slot 31 which is provided for this purpose.
It will ,thus be seen that there is provided an apparatus in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions t practical use. I i
As possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
lolaim:
1. A box comprising a case having a bottom wall, a front wall, side walls and a rear wall, a cover having a top wall, side walls, a front wall and a'rear wall, said rear wall of the cover being located rearwardly of the rear wall of the case, said side walls of the cover having portions straddling the side walls of the case, means on the side walls of the case, forward of its rear wall, and above its bottom wall engaging means on the straddling portions of the side walls of the cover and also located forwardly of the rear wall of the case, to hinge the'cover to case, .said rear wall of the case being formed with a slot adjacent the bottom wall and below the hinge means,
a holder for a banded article in the case and supported on the bottom wali of the case, said holder having a bottom, central, rearwardly extending arm projecting rearwardly through said slot having a rear end portion extending rearwardl-y beyond said rear wall of the case, and actuating means on the cover, located rea-rwardly of the rear wall of the case and above said rear end and adjacent thereto, whereby when said cover is swung open about said hinge means, said actuating means will press down on said rear end of said arm to swing said holder upwardly. j Y
2. The combination of claim 1, said am having a lug short of its rear end extending upwardly and contacting the front of the rear wall of the case above said slot.
3. The combination of claim 1, said rear end of said arm being inclined rearward'lyand upwardly.
. 4. The combination of claim 1, said arm being formed with a central" slot extending to its rear end and having outwardly extending inclined teeth at the outer ends of its rear edge adapted to latch the rear wall of the case at the ends of said slot therein;
5. The combination of claim 4, said arm having an upwardly extending, intermediate lug contacting the inside of the rear wall above said slot.
6. The combination of claim 5, said rear end of said ar-rn being inclined upwardly and rearwardly.
7. The combination of claim 1, said actuator means on the cover comprising a wall parallel to the rear wall and extending down from the top wall of the cover and having a lower edge adapted to contact said arm when said cover is swung open.
8. 'The cornbination of claim 7, said rear wall of the casing being formed with a notch in its upper edge, above the slot therein, through which the lower end of said parallel, wall may pass when said cover is opened or closed.
9. The combination of claim 7, said arm being provided with an upwardly extending lug short of its rear end, adapted to contact the inner side of said rear wall of said case. 19. The combination of claim v9, said am being formed with a central slot extending to its rear end, and the outer ends of the rear end of the arm being formed with teeth to latch past, the ends of saidslot.
11. The combination of claim 10, the rear end or said arm being inclined upwardly and rearwardly.
