IMPROVEMENT IN BEDS, CUSHIONS, AND OTHER UPHOLSTERINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 110,820, dated J anuary` 10, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE H. BARNEs, of
-l Hoosick Falls, in the county of Rensselaer and to which my improvement has been applied,
part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same.

My invention relates to devices for ventilating beds, cushions, 'and car or chair seats; and it consists in the arrangement therein of a series of pairs oftubes, each one ofa pair opposite to and connected with its ais-amis by a coiled wire.
l will now describe my invention as applied to a bed or mattress, its application to the other articles to which it is applica-ble being made in the same manner.
A'represents the cover or casing of the bed or mattress. B is the body or stuffing of the Same.
In the casin g A are formed openings a', leading through the body B of the said bed or mattress.
In the openings in the casing A are placed thimbles or short tubes G to keep them open when the bed is being used.
The tubes C may be made of rubber or other suitable material which will keep the end parts of said openings'l'rom being closed when the bed is being used. The tubes or thimbles C also serve to prevent the stuffing B from working out of the openings c in the casing or cover A. The openings through the body yor stuiing B are kept open by wire coils D efxtending the entire length of the opening, and secured at its ends to the cover or casing A. These openings a may extend longitudinally or laterally or vertically through the bed, mattress, or other article, orin two or more directions at the same time.
