HIAL H. NEWTON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,633, dated I une 6, 1871.
To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, Hmm' H. NEWTON, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Tidy-Pin; and I do hereby declare that the followingis afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of pins employed to fasten a tidy to the cloth back of a chair or sofa, on which I believe myself to hayemade a newand valuable improvement.
I have discovered aprinciple of construction or new Way of shaping the pin, which consists in so combining a lateral or branched head with a pair oi' opposite and short corrugations that a narrowr recess is formed between them, in which the fabric will lie and prevent the pin from working loose or slipping out.
B B representtwoparallelprongs5 A A, two slight eorrugations near the head 5 and C, a laterally-branched head, preferably of the form shown.
As the cloth of parlor sofas and chairs is closely drawn, has very little elasticity, and is also very expensive, it is highly important that the threads shall not he forced apart to any very appreciable extent; hence I make the prongs of my pin perfectly straight and parallel up to the corrugations, and after they are passed, While the corrugations themselves are small, so as to create but a slight lateral pressi ure and allow the little elasticity of the cloth to bring it quickly within the recess. The lat erally-branched and spacious form of head is also an essential requisite in carrying out my design, which is to form a pin that shall remain firmly attached to the cloth and retain rmly the open net-Work of which the tidy is composed.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a' full understanding of my invention, what I esteem to be new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a pair of straight and parallel prongs, B B, of the opposite corrugations A A, and laterally-bran ched head C, arranged to form an intermediate narrow recess, as and for the purpose specified.
