Description

tiiril mes LEioNoE moor, oEEUDsoN orrY, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 113,341.0, dated April 4,1871.
IMPROVEMENT INkCOMBS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEoNoE Proolgof the city and county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Comb; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of tl1is'speci cation.
My invention relates Ato a nev;r way of forming metal-backed combs, by combining three elements, each old in itself, but all brought together as a whole or unit for the rst time, and producing aresult never before attained, namely, a non-corrosive metal-backed comb.
' The great objection to horn or gotta-percha combs is their lack of vstrength in the back;
To obviate this diculty the backs have beenlaterally ribbed with the same substance to strengthen them,
and this has been patented; but it is found inadequate to produce thedesired result. Metal-backs have been applied and patented, and these secure onel desideratum, that ot' strength, but are accompanied with a liability to be corroded by the acid that exudesfrom.
the'head.
Now, it is my object to 'remove this didculty, and I lhave successfully accomplished it by combining old non-corrosive teeth, an old metal back, and auoldrib, heretofore employed for strengthening purp0ses.
Figure l is a side, and
Figure 2, a cross-sectional `View of my improved comb.
'A is the metal back B B, the lateral ribs; and
C, the teeth and body oi' the comb.
As the teeth C are drawn through the hair the acid therefrom is arrested by the under side of the ribs B, while the metal back, which receives the strain, prevents fracture. Thus these parts co-operate to produce a common result-that is to say, a comb which has the so-much `preferred non-corrosive teeth, the strength required in the back, and which does not allow the metal to be discolored or distigured.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention,
What I desire to protect by Letters Pmatent, is
A comb, having` a metallic back A, noncorrosve teeth, and body C, and the centraL-l'aterah and noncorrosive ribs B B, combined as described, andfor the purpose specied.
