IMPROVEMENT'IN SPRINGS FOR MATTRES SES, &c.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,853, dated October 10, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. JUDsoN, of Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Springs for Mattresses, Seats, 850.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making apart of this spec itication.

The nature of my invention consists in the manner of fastening or joining the springs for mattresses, seats, 850., together by means of a double lock or looks of metal holding the springs separate, one spring in each lock, to prevent the separation or coming together of the springs, and also to prevent slipping or moving in any direction so as to become displaced.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its con struction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is aplan View, and Fig. 2a side view.

A A represent the springs usually employed in mattresses, chair-seats, or other articles of a similar nature. These springs are placed as close together as may be desired, and connected in the following manner: Under the top coil of each spring is passed a metal strap or band, B, the ends of which are turned upward and over the wire of the adjoining springs forming the looks I) 1). Near each end of the metal band B is riveted a small meta-1 strap or band, C, one end of which is bent over the wire of the first spring, forming the locks 01, and thus locking the three springs together. All the springs of the mattress, seat, 850., are locked together in this manner both at the top and bottom. To prevent noise in the look any noiseless packing may be used. The lock in connection with the strap B of metal, leather, or any other suitable material drawing across the top and bottom of the spring connecting the locks together and holding the spring in a firm manner. The locks and connecting-strap may bemade of one or more pieces, as may be desired. The connecting-strap prevents the springs from slipping, and keeps the looks from turning or twisting over, or moving sidewise; also prevents the center of the spring from pressing out, and gives more strength and resistance to the spring, and keeps the hair mattress from working down into the spring; the whole, in connection with the top and bottom coil of the spring, made large, and locked or connected at the corners at right angles, so as to hold the spring at four points. If the connect ing-strap be of metal, to prevent noise from the center of the spring striking the strap, a leather, rubber, cloth, or other suitable lining, a, is to be used on the inner side of the strap of both top and bottom of the spring.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A series of springs, A A, fastened together by means of the looks I) b and d d, and the connecting-straps B B with or Without the lining a, substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
