PORTABLE WASHTUBJ lSpecification of Letters Patent.
` Patented Aug. 18, 1914i.
Application filed August 22, 1913.` Serial N o. 786,068.
To all i/)hom z'tmay/ concern:
Be it known that I, ELLEN M.` JOHNSON S'rons, a citizen of the United States, re` siding in the city and county `of Philadel` phia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Portable /Vashtub, of which the followingis a specification. y
My invention consists of a portable wash tub more `particularly for laundry purposes, the same being adapted to be placed within a sink or upon a table, bench, etc., and composed ,of a body with means for discharging the wash water therein, either into a sink or by theattachment of a hose or conveyer into another receptacle, or adapting such water to be directed to a drain, sewer, gutter, etc., the construction of parts being hereinafter described and the novelty thereof pointed out in the claim.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanyingdrawing, but the im` portant instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.
Figure l `represents a longitudinal vertical section of a laundry tub embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a top or plan view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section on an enlarged `scale of the water discharging device thereof. Fig.` 4 represents a similar section, one of the members being in different position from that shown in Fig. 8.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
` Referring to the drawings, l designates the body of the tub, the same being rovided with handles 2, and feet 3, for evic ent purposes.
4l designates a nipple which is secured to Athe bottom of the tub and has perforations 5 in the side thereof forming communication with the interior of the tub for the discharge of the wash water from the tub and straining the same in its entrance into said nipple.
6 designates a vertically disposed tubular stopper whose lower portion has a closed side and has an open bottom which is adapted to fit slidingly over the nipple Il solas to close the top and perforated side of the latter and prevents thereby the discharge of water from the body of the tub into the said nipple, said tube having its upper portion constitute the handle 7 whereby the tube may be.. raised so as to uncover the perforations 5 of the `nipple `and thus permit the lischargc of water from the body lnto the nipple. The `nipple is extended downwardly below the `bottom of the tub, I?
and consequently below thc side perforations 5 forming the Vneck 8` which is screwthreadedfor the attachment therewith of the screwthreaded portion of the coupling of a hose or pipe 9, whereby the latter may be placed in communication with said nipple and conscqlieiitlywvith the interior of the body of the tub.
The operation is `as follows: lhen the tub is placed in a sink, wit is supplied with water` of the required temperature, the stopper 6 being lowered to `full extent so as to cover the top of the nipple and side pcrforations thereof. As the top of the nipple is open and so in communication with the interior of the stopper, the latter having anopen bottom, as has been stated, should the tub be supplied with an excess of water, it will overflow at the top of said stopper :into the same, and so enter the nipple, whereby it will discharge into the sink or the hose or pipe `9. Vhen the washing is accomplished, the stopper is raised whereby the perforations of the nipple are uncovered and thus the wash water may enter the nipple through said pcrforations and so discharge the water from the tub, said perforations acting as strainers, preventing iinproper matter from entering the nipple and clogging thc same. The wateri'lows through the nipple and so enters the sink from which it may escape through the usual out-let thereof, it being noticed in Fig. l, that the bottom of the neck is above the floor of the sink so that it will not be clogged by said floor. Vhen the tub is placed on a bench, table, chair, the hose or pipe 9 is screwed to the nipple whereby when the Washing is accomplished and the stopper raised or opened, the wash water may escape through the nipple into said hose or pipe, when it may be directed by the latter to a bucket or pail, a sewer, drain, gutter, or other place.
After the tub has been used, it may be rethe nipple firmly with the bottom of the tub,
I form the lower end thereof with the flange l0, which is brazed, solde-red, or otherwise firmly connected with said bottom. The screw-threaded portion 11, of the nipple 4, is a downward extension of the body of the latter, constituting` a neck or nozzle, and this with said body and the flange 10 may be lcast in one piece, thus forming a strong structure of the nipple and adapting the latter to sustain the stopper thereon in its upi right position, said stopper when in closed position, has its lower end abutting` upon the fla-nge l0. The lower end of the nozzle l1 terminates above the bottom of the feet 3 and so is adapted to discharge the' wash water from the body into the sink, but when the tubA is rested on awash bench, table or the like such nozzle is sufficiently above the latter to screw the plug of the hose 9 thereto and allow a portion of said hose. to pass between the feet 3 and be directed to a bucket or pail or otherreceptacle as lhereinbefore change the wash'lwater and closed ltov admit of the tub being replenished with. fresh water. "When it is desired to apply a wringer to the tub, there is 4attached to an end or side of the same the loop, hoop or keeper 12, which latter is adapted toreceive the clamp or other suitable member of t-he frame of the wringer so as to support said wringer properly on the tub.
Having thus described myl invention what lf claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A portablevwash tub comprising a body with support-ing feet, a hollow nlpple in the bottom of said body having' a perforation in its side, and a securing` flange seatedv on said bottom, a nozzle depending from said nipple for detachable connection with a discharge conveying` tube, and a, vertically disposed overfiow stopper having,` its lower portion movably fitted on said nipple and its bottom end adapted to close against said flange.
