- SOAP HOLDER. No. 536,379. Patented Mar. 26, 1895.
INVENTORS States, residing at Townsend, in the county of UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE GILHAM AND JOHN R. ERVEY, OF TOWNSEND, MONTANA.
SOAP-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming pait of Letters Patent No. 536,379, dated March 26, 1895 Serial No. 441,976. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEoReE'W. GILHAM and JOHN R. ERVEY, citizens of the United Meagher and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Soap-Dish, of which the following is a specification. V
Our invention relates to improvements in soap dishes and more particularly that class of soap dishes which are adapted to be held in place on the edge of a bowl, wash basin, tub or other receptacle of a like kind.
It consists in certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a perspective view of the soap dish applied to the edge of a bowl or other similar receptacle, and Fig. 2, is a transverse vertical section of the devices shown in Fig 1.
A in the drawing, designates a soap dish; B, a spring for holding the soap dislfin place on the edge of a bowl.
Ois a bowl, basin, tub or similar receptacle.
A is a slot in the side of the soap dish to allow any water to drain out of the same.
D is an extension of the bottom of the soap dish, and F is a rod or bar on the bottom of the soap dish for preventing the tipping of the same.
The soap dish A is preferably made in a Y generally rectangular shape and of any suitable material. In order to attach it to the edge of a bowl, basin, tub or similar recepta-' cle, it is provided with the spring holder B, which is attached to'the soap dish, in such a manner that only one edge or side of thesoap dish is over the rim of the receptacle 0, nearly all of the soap dish projecting beyond the said receptacle and thus being entirely out of the way of any operations carried on in the same. The spring holder B is bent to form coils 1), near each end of the soap dish, and has two holding or clamping portions, which are so shaped as to conform to the edge or rim of the receptacle, 0, oneportion adapted to extend inside and the other outside the same, the soap dish A being thus firmly held in place by the spring action of the coils b.
The spring holder B, is attached in any suitable manner, at the lower part of its inside clamping portion, to the soap dish A,*tl1ere being provided for this purpose an apron or lip D, which extends from the said soapdish A to the spring holder B,preferablyconforming to the general shape of the said inside clamping portion of the spring holder B. The
apronD may be an extension of the bottom the receptacle 0, without any chance of leakage outside the said receptacle.
The spring holder B is shown in the drawings as adapted to fit on a receptacle having a flaring rim but itis apparent that our device can be readily adapted to fit on a receptacles of other shapes without departing from the spirit of ourinvention. The lower clamp or outside portion of the spring holder Bis preferably bent back at its lower end to render it easy to adjust the device in place on the rim of the receptacle 0,
In order to drain off any water that may get into the soap dish A, we provide the side of the same next to the receptacle 0, with a long slot or opening A, the lower boundary of thesaid slot, being flush with the upper surface of the bottom of the soap dish A. By this construction the thorough drainage of the soap dish into the receptacle 0, is facilitated though only the very edge of the soap dish is over the rim of said receptacle.
A rod or bar F is attached to the bottom of the soap dish A, parallel with. its length, its ends projecting beyond the said soap dish and extending into the coils b of the spring holder B.
The rod F prevents the tipping forward of the soap dish A, which is attached to the spring holder, only at the lower end of the apron D, when it is desired to pour out the contents of the receptacle 0 and serves as an additional support to said soap dislrwhen in its normal position. 7
c The soap dish A may also be provided with a hinged cover, preferably of wire as shown and having a suitable catch or latch, so that when a piece of soap is placed in the holder A, it will not fall out when it is desired to empty the receptacle O of any contents.
saws
It will be seen from the foregoing that our nvention is of simple and cheap construction, While it possesses points of advantage in that it can be readily though firmly adjusted in place and may be adapted for use on many styles of bowls, basins, tubs or similar receptacles, and at the same time retain great efficiency and utility as a soap dish.
hat we claim, is-
1. In a soap dish the combination with a soap holding receptacle, of an apron extending therefrom, a draining slot and a spring holder having clamping portions, one of said portions being secured to the edge of the said apron which is farthest from the soap receptacle, whereby the soap dish can be held in a suitable position upon a basin or other similar receptacle, substantially as described.
2. A soap dish having an apron forming an extension of its bottom, a spring holder provided with coiled portions, attached to said extension and a rod upon said bottom having ends adapted to project into said coiled portions, to prevent the tipping of the soap dish, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a soap dish, of a spring holder, attached to said soapdish and adapted to fit on the rim of a bowl or similar receptacle and a rod or bar fastened to the bottom of said dish adapted to bear on said spring holder, to prevent the tipping of the soap dish, substantially as described and shown.
4:. The combination with a soap dish of clamping or holding portions, adapted to fit on the rim of a bowl or similar receptacle, actuating springs for the same, a slot in the side of the soap dish flush with its bottom, an
, apron, adapted to guide the drainage into the bowl or other receptacle, a hinged cover, having a suitable catch and a rod on the bottom of the said soap dish, having projecting ends adapted to prevent tipping, substantially as described.
