Description
JOSEPH D. OPPENHEIMER, or PHILADELP-ma, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. marsa-dated January s, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAIR-PUFFS OR ROLLS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, JOSEPH D. Qrrnnnnmnn, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in theManufaetui-e of Hair- Iu's or Rolls, oi'which the following is a specification.'
Figure 1 of the drawing represents the section of a hair-puff, embodying my improvement;
Figure 2 represents an end or sectional view of the pu completed; and
Figure Ssh'ows the end of the puff, wire, and cord,
connecting the parts together.
A is the wool which the roll'or puff is made of.
B is the wire the wool is attached to. y
C, is the twine or thread, by means of which the wool A is sewed on the wire B.
, Any one versed in the art of manufacturing hair-v puiis or rolls knows that the usual way is to attach the wool, done up or carded in small bits', to the wire, by means of other wires or thread, the wool having to be carded over again when the puff is made, so as to give it the necessary or desired shape.
-I have found that, by carding up the wool by machinery inV laps, and cutting it into rolls, I can easily.
sew it lon the wire B, and the wool thus treated requires no after carding.
Therefore, and while my method gives a roll or puh"A ljust as 'substantial as when made bythe Qld usual way, it saves considerable time and labor, and also waste of material.
I amv aware, asahove mentioned, that in the manu-i facture of hair-puffs or rolls, the wool is always attached to a wire, and I lay no claim ou this; but I am not aware that rolls or puis have ever yet been made by stitching the wool to the wire after having carded it (the wool) in laps by machinery, as aforesaid; and
I claim as anew article of manufacturel A hair-roll or puf'when the wool, after having been carded in laps by machinery or otherwise, is sewedon the wire B in 'the manner above set forth and described. l
J. I). OPPENHEIMER.
