Description

ttllrh lter THEODORE DEMUTH, 0F DANBURY, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 113,274, dated April 4, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN FELTED rAlanlcs.`
The Schedule referred to n-these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom 'it 'ma/y concern: Y
Beit known that I, THnoDonE DEMUTH, of Danbury, inthe county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of y Mixed Felted Fabrics; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being-had Ito the accompanying drawing forming part vof this specification.
This inveution'relates to improvements in the manufacture of felted fabrics with mixed colors.
The nature of the invention consists in the preparation of woolen or cotton yarn of dilierent colors, to be applied to the wool in process of manufacture, for imparting the mixed character, by a solution of gum shellac or other suitable resinous orglutinous substance, for the purpose of keeping the same intact and distinct, and preventing the assimilation and entanglement of its fibers with lthose 'of the wool with which it is mixed in the processes of carding and fullsoaked ina solution of shellac or similar substance and dried. 1 Y
Thequantity and color of the yarn to be used are determined by the result intended to be obtained.
This mixture, by meansof the finishing-cards, which are so adjusted as to produce the least possible tearing or disintegration of the pieces of yarn, is then carded intoa web, which may be formed and felted into cloth, hat-bodies, or other felted articles, in the usual manner. The yarn may also be mixed with the Wool without the assistance of the picker, by spreading or sprinklingit upon the bat as it is being fed upon the finishing-cards.
By this means the different colors ofthe fabric are 'Y much more marked and distinct than they would be if the yarn was not gummed.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by- Letters Patent- An improvement in the process of manufacturing mixed felted fabrics, by applying an adhesive liquid to each different-colored yarn, and drying the same thereon before the intermixture of Wool therewith, for the purpose of preventing the colored fibers from becoming entangled with the wool, and to preserve the illdividuality of the several colors.
y THEODORE DEMUTH.
