Letters Patent No. 113,748, dated April 18, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCARFS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and maldng part of the nuns.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE E. DEXTER, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scarfs, of which the following is a specification.
'Figure I represents an elevation of my improved ladies tie embodying my invention.
Figure II shows a single strand of which the tie is made.
Figure III represents a piece of the material, show-. ing the manner the same is'jwoven.
My invention consists in the combination of two,- three, or more strands, A, of a double fringeband or cords of the desired length, which are twisted spirally, and then tied or fastened together at their ends a, where a-suitable tassel, B, may be attached to make a finish of the article.
, The material is woven in broad strips, as shown in Fig. III, by arranging the warp-threads m, n, consist-- ing of three or more threads, at intervals, leaving an open space, in m, of double, the size of the desired length of fringe between them, the weft 0r woofthreads forming, then, the fringe, which may be made of any desired material, such as silk, cotton, or other suitable fabric.
After the material is woven the same is cut through in the center, between the warps, forming the strands A; as shown in Fig. II,.and are then twisted in such a manner that the-fringe part will form a spiral screw around the warp-threads, when two or more of these twisted strands are fastened together at their ends, forming the scarf, as represented in Fig. I.
Instead of making this scarf by a combination of two or more double-fringed strands, as above described, the same may be made of single-fringed strands, and a greater number of these single-fringed strands, twisted in the manner as above described, tied together at their ends.
What I'claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
, The herein-described scarf as a new article of manufacture, consisting of the combination of two or more single or double-fringed twisted strands, A, secured together at their ends, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE E. DEXTER.
