CAST-OFF FOR SUSIEENDERS.`

Speccation of `Letters Patent.

To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, GUY O. SMITH, of Newton, in theJ county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new `and useful Improvement in Cast-Offs for its nature.`

The essential object of my invention is to provide a cast-ofi:1 means or device by which the separate parts of the Suspenders maybe easily combined, securely held when combined, and cast oifby a single act or operation as occasion may require.

My invention can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows in front elevation the means or device embodyingmyinvention connecting `parts of Suspenders. Fig. 2 is a cross vertical section of said device. Fig. 3 shows in front elevation parts of said device to which special reference will hereinafter be made. Fig. 4 shows in side elevation a portionof the device with suspender parts connecting therewith. Fig. 5 shows in cross vertical` section a slightly Vmodified construction embodying my invention. Fig.

6 is `also a vertical section showing the essential membersof the modified device in a disengagingposition. Fig? shows in front elevation one of the essential members 0f the modified `form of device.

i I prefer to employ ends of thewell known kind having double loops 3 and 4, respectively, one lying `outside the other.

For connecting the suspender ends with the strap or webbing; 1 ofthe Suspenders there is provided the following `described means or ldevice. Connecting immediately withthe strap or web 1 is a loop 5 having a crossbar 6. `Making connection and preferably pivotal connection with this crossbar` is the base member `7; of a two part clasp.

Fig.` 8 shows in cross vertical section a still further This member is preferably struck up from at the upper end of which there extends upwardly separate spaced arms 8,` 8, which are turned around the crossbar 6 to make connection therewith as aforesaid. The member 7 depends from the crossbar hanging by these arms and at or near the bottom end of the body thereof there projects forward therefrom a curved tongue 9. Engag` ing also with the crossbar 6 is the cover member 10 of the above-mentioned clasp. This member is preferably struck up from a single blank and consists of a metal piece or `a single blank andconsists of a metal plate y plate made preferably slightly concave and which pivotally connects with the crossbar 6 by turning the end portion 11 of the member around said bar between the arms 8, 8, of the member 7 From the point of its connection with the crossbar the member 10 is extended so far that a portion 12 thereof, formed preferably by bending inwardly the end of said member, may yieldingly engage the under side of the curved tongue 9 of the base member by slippingunder and around this tongue, the two parts coperating to form a separable fastener by `which the two members are held together.

The members 7 and `10 are adapted to hold and retain `between them a slide 14 arranged upon the loop or loops of the suspender ends and through which these loops are adapted to play. The slide 14 preferably comprises a metal shell or housing made by bending up a flat'metal blank of suitable length and edge configuration,

which blank is bent from the point 15 at the center of its length and has sides separated to form an open space or cavity between them, the ends of `the piece being brought together'. Within the cavity of the housing y place by the bearing stress exerted `bythe sides of the housing. A cast-off lfor Suspenders comprisin base and cover members pivotally connecte whereby said cover may be turned to occupy an open or closed position withzrelation to said base member, each of Said members being :provided `with parts coperating` with one another to form a releasableclaspfor retaining said members when said cover is closed and which clasp` is broken by the openingof said cover,; and a slide comprising a housin and eyelet contained therein socketed to 11e between said members and having bearing against said clasp when said cover is closed and which slide 1s releasable upon the opening of said cover and breaking of said clasp as aforesaid.
