SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,721, dated March 6, 1900.

Be it known that we, HARRY O. PAINE and WILLIAM G. DICKEY, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Taylorstown, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Rubbers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a fastener for rubbers.
The invention has for its object the provision of a means of securing the overshoe or rubber to the foot, so that the same may not he accidentally pulled off in mud, (to.
With the above object in view the invention finally consists in the construction, combination, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described in detail.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference designate like parts throughout the several views,in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a portion of an overshoe with our improvement attached. Fig. 2is a rear View of the device, also attached to the shoe. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same removed and in its unlocked position.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the rubber overshoe, and the nun1eral2 the shoe. Secured to the heel of the rubber by means of a shouldered opening 3 and rivet at is the metal strap 5, said strap having formed upon its rear side the guides 5, and the inner end of the strap terminates in a spring-tongue 6, which engages with the heel of the shoe, as shown at Fig. 1. Loosely fitted to slide Within the guides of the strap is the spring key-plate 7. This key-plate is slightly larger at its inner end and is also slightly curved at its extremity, as shown at Serial No. 710,537. (No model.)
Fig. 3, and to prevent the plate being wholly withdrawn from the strap a small projection or pin 7 is formed upon it.
In practice the shoe is inserted in the rubber as heretofore, with the keyplate 7 in its elevated position. The tongue engages the heel and prevents the accidental removal of the shoe. When it is desired to remove the shoe, the key-plate is forced downward, as shown at Fig. 3, thus disengaging the springtongue from the heel, when the rubber may be easily removed.
Having thus fully shown and described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fastener for overshoes, comprising the curved metal strap 5, terminating at its inner end in an inclined tongue 6, and provided on its rear face with guides, and means for securing said strap to the overshoe, combined with a curved spring key-plate operating in said guides with its inner end adapted to engage the spring-tongue 6, to compress the same, and a pin secured in the rear end of said spring key-plate to limit its movement in the guides, substantially as described.
2. A fastener for overshoes, comprising in combination with the overshoe having a shouldered recess in the upper part of the heel portion, a curved metal strap engaging in said recess and riveted to said overshoe, said strap terminating at its inner end in an inclined spring-tongue adapted to engage the heel of a shoe, guides formed integral with the rear face of said strap, a curved spring key-plate engaging and adapted to operate in said guides with its inner end engaging the spring-tongue, and means secured to the outer end of said key-plate to limit its movement in the guides, substantially as described.
