UNITED STATEC PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. CLARE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO SHARP & SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
URINAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 24, 1913.
Patented July 28, 1914.
Serial No. 763,322.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES E. CLARE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Urinals, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in urinals and is fully described and explained in the specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which I igure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device, and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 3 is a pouch of ordinary form secured to a belt-portion t, side-straps 5 being provided whereby to hold the pouch in its proper position. The parts thus far enumerated are of old and wellknown construction and may be varied, at will, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
It will be understood, of course, that the pouch is adapted to receive at its lower end other pouches or l'lllltl-(JOIlttllllOlS in accordance with common practice.
In the use of devices of the character shown, much difficulty has been experienced in obtaining a suitable fluid-tight connection between the upper part of the pouch and the organ which enters it, more especially be cause of the varying size of the organ from time to time. I-Ieretoit'ore, it has been common to provide at the mouth of the pouch an elastic rubber flap fitting the organ somewhat tightly, so as to prevent the egress of fluids. However, owing to the varying size of the organ, this has been wholly unsatisfactory, the elastic parts sometimes fitting so loosely as to permit leakage and at other times so tightly as to produce great con gestion and extreme pain.
I have devised a structure which not only is free from objections, but which, in addition, is inherently so adjustable as to enable Copies of this patent may be obtained for a single size of device to fit all wearers. The prior class of devices were made with a closely fitting flap and the mouth of the pouch had to be of a special size for each individual, and even then they produced the undesirable result heretofore set forth as arising from the varying size oi the organ of the same individual from time to time.
To accomplish my improved result, I surround the mouth of the pouch with the band 6, preferably of non-elastic material, and on the interior of the pouch I place a hollow annulus 7 of soft, rubber, the interior of which is connected to an inflating tube 8. In the use of the device, it is applied to the person in the usual manner, but with the rubber annulus deflated, so that its application is a very easy matter, the mouth oi. the pouch being very wide and large at this time. When the device is properly positioned, the soft rubber annulus is blown up to produce a very gentle pressure throughout its inner margin. The air is held in, preferably by bending over and tying the inflated tube as shown, and if desired its upper end may be tucked under the belt. It will be manifest that this produces a perfectly tight structure, which is substantially free from the possibility of leakage, and furtl'iermore, that the material fitting the organ is so disposed and of such a nature as to be exceedingly strong and elastic to yield under the slightest pressure, so that under no circumstances can the device produce discomfort.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a urinal, a pouch, an elastic inflatable annulus at the mouth thereof, and a flexible non-elastic band surrounding said annulus, tor the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 22nd day of April, 1913.
CHARLES E. CLARE. In presence ot--- L. I'IETSLAR, A. J. FLOYD.
