Description

F. J. CROUCH & S. B. COOKE.
SWINGI-NG LEG FOR BEDS.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 6, 1914.
Patented July 21, 1914.
Attorneys co, WASHINGTON: n. c.
1 UNITED sT 'rEs PATENT onnrcn.
FRANK J. cnouori AND SAMUEL B. oooK or PORTLAND, OREGON.
' SWINGINQ LEG FOR BEDS.
county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented a new and, useful Swinging Leg for Beds, of whlch'the following ls aspec fication.
The present invention relates to improvements in swinging legs for beds, the leg as herein shown being particularly "designed for use in connection with-the-bed shown in Patent 1,088,970 granted March 3, 1914, to
Frankel Crouch, one object of the invention, being the provision of a leg structure, by means of which the same is automatically released and actuated by gravity to swing out of the place as the bed is elevated to a vertical position and to automatically swing into place and be looked as the bed is placed in horizontal position and the weight of the carrying structure thrown thereupon.
A further object of the present invention,
is the provision of a novel mounting for a leg to a bed, in which the hinging'pin in combination with a lug forms a means whereby the leg will automatically swing into and be locked in proper supporting position and when moved in an opposite direction will automatically be released.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details I of construction hereinafter dethat changes, in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a portion of the head and foot of the bed embodying the main features of the co-pending application above referred to and having; attached thereto the present invention. Fig. 2 is an inside plan view of one of the bed carried members of the leg hinge and lock. Fig. 3 is a similar View partly in section, the rocker leg in the position it assumes when the bed is uprighted. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the portion of the leg supporting and attaching means carried by the head or foot member'of the bed. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the connecting end of the leg.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented July 21,1914.
App1ication fiIedMarch G, 1914. Serial No. 822,965.
designates the framefstructure. of the bed which 1s "bolted at2 to the overbalancing head structure 3 as particularly set forthin.
the patent referred to andby means of the bolts 4 to the foot casting 5. v ,1 As thehinging element for the respective rocker, legs, 21 and the foot legs 22 are iden tical, the description of one will suflice for both. T
As particularly shown in Fig. 4, a lug 9 is formed integral with. the respectiveends of thehead 3,-while carried thereby is a projection or lug 10. A projecting plate 11 is past integraland cooperates with;the clampflng plate 12 throughthe clamping bolt 13 to properly assemble the leg carrying pin 14 between the fixed lugs 9 and 10. This pin 14 is adapted tobe fitted through the ta ered socket 17 of'the lug 15 and the elongated slot 18 of the lug 16 of either one of the respec tive legs 21 and 22. The lug 15 is disposed to abut the lug 10 while the lug 16 is adjacent to the lug 9, the lugs 15 and 16 fitting astride of the projection 11 and the clamping plate 12, so that the pin 14 connect the leg 21 or 22 to the member 3 or 5 respectively. v
It will thus be seen that when the bed is moved to upright position from the position shown in Fig. 1, that the legs 21 and 22 will tilt, the tapered slot or socket 17 acting as a fulcrum point for the pin 14 of the legs,
while the lug 16 will move due to the length v of the slot 18 and thus permit the legs to un-' eat from the recesses 19 and thus permit the lugs 9 to leave the recesses 19. By this means it will be seen that the legs 21 and 22 when the bed is in a vertical position will be free to move inwardly and thus not be projected outwardly beyond the plane of the projecting portion of the members 8 and 5. By this means the legs are automatically folded upon the inside of the frame 1 at the plate 11 in its slot, and then the plate 12 is disposed thereabove and finally clamped in position by means of the bolt 13, to hold the parts in the position as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
lVhatis claimed is:
1. A bed, including a supporting member, a leg, a pin connected to the leg, a clamp carried by the supporting member for engaging the pin and whereby the pin forms a hinging element for the leg a locking device having two members, one carried by the supporting member and the other carried by theleg for locking the leg at right angles to the supporting, member and whereby when the supporting member is moved in a plane at right angles to such locked position permit the automatic release of the leg so that the leg will wing in a plane in parallel to the supporting member.
2. A bed, including a supporting member,
a leg having two spaced lugs, one of said lugs being provided with an elongated slot and the other with a tapered slot, a pin projecting through said slot, a clamp carried by the supporting member for engagin the pin between the lugs to cause the pin to orm a hinging element, a locking device carried by the supporting member and the leg for locking the leg at right angles to the supporting member whereby when the supporting member is moved in a plane at right angles to such locked position, the leg is released and swings to a plane parallel to the supporting member. a In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two Witnesses.
