NOZZLE-SUPPORT FOR FIRE-HOSE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoI-IN J. MnsxILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nozzle- Supports for Fire-Hose, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to nozzle-supports for fire-hose, and, primarily, is an improvement upon a certain construction of nozzlesupport illustrated, described and claimed in U. S. Patent No. 883,969, granted me April 7th, 1908.
The objects of the present invention are, first, to provide a more secure and convenient means for supporting in a locked position the nozzle of the hose; and, second, to provide an improved base for supporting in a detachable and universally movable manner the hose supporting column or standard, said base being so constructed as to be capable of compactly and readily folding for convenient transportation upon the hosewa 'on, and when in use, to be perfectly rigid anc secure.
With these principal objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appendec claims.
Referring to the drawing-Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved nozzle-support in its operative position, a hose-nozzle being shown mounted in position. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the base with the hose supporting column or standard detached. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View of the parts shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail in elevation of the base in its folded condition. Fig. 6 is a detail in perspective of the nozzle-holding yoke.
Similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts in all the figures of the drawis in the patent heretofore referred to, the invention may be said to chiefly consist of a base 1, a hose and nozzle-supporting column or post 2, and a universal connection 3, located between the lower end of the column or standard and the base, whereby the said column or standard may be readily and freely moved or swung in any direction what would approximately be the four corncrs of the base, pairs of ears 8-, are formed, the spaces occurring between the ears producing recesses 9, the latter having continuations 10, formed in the upper face of the base.
Within each of the recesses 9, is located the inner end of a folding arm or leg 11, which is pivoted to the ears 8 embracing the same, by means of a bolt 12, whereby, as will be obvious, the arms or legs 11 are capable of folding in the manner illustrated in Fig. 5, that is with their outer ends brought together. A strap or other similar device may be passed about the legs when thus folded, and in such manner, the legs may be temporarily secured. At their outer extremities, the arms or legs 11. may be provided with angularly disposed spurs or points 13, designed to be driven into the roadway for the purpose of lending stability to the structure, and at their inner ends, said arms or legs may be provided with flat extensions 14, designed to take into and [it the recesses 10 heretofore mentioned, the upper surfaces of the said extension being flush with the upper surface of the plate 4 of the base.
A turn-table 14, is mounted upon the base thus constructed, and the same overlaps the inner flat extensions 14 of the several arms or legs 11, whereby the legs and the plate, and, in fact, the entire base, become locked movably together. From the underside of this turn-table depends a centrally located cylindrical stud 16, designed to conform to the central opening 5 of the base, said stud being provided at its lower end with a radially projecting pin 17, which, when the stud is lowered into the opening or hole 5, passes through the offset or slot 6 thereof, and when the turn-table is rotated, occupies the circular countersink or recess 7,'whereby, as will be apparent, the turn-table is detachably locked in a rotatable position upon the base. Upon the upper side of the turn-table is located a pair of bearing-ears 18, the same having transversely alining perforations.
2 designates the hose supporting column or standard, and the same is provided at its lower end with an embracing metal ferrule 19, having a transverse eye. The ferrule 19 enters between the bearing-ears 18, and is pivoted thereto by means of a transverse bolt 20. By this means of connection, it will be apparent that the hose supporting column or standard is capable of being swung in any direction either horizontally or vertically.
At the upper end of the column or standard 2, is located the nozzle-holder 21, and the same preferably comprises a socketshaped securing-plate 22, adapted to be bolted to and embrace the end of the column or standard, a pair of vertical arms 23, and a nozzle embracing clamping-arm or band 24. One end of the clamping-arm or band 24 is hinged, as at 25, to one of the arms 23, and at its opposite end, said clamping-arm or band is reduced and provided with an eye 26, designed to enter a recess 27, formed in the upper end of the remaining arm 23 of the pair. This arm is provided with transverse perforations 28, whereby, when the clamping-arm is in position a split or other shaped pin 29, may be employed to connect the arms and band together, in which manner the nozzle of the hose may be securely and temporarily held in place. At a suitable point on the column or standard 2 I may locate one or more hose or pipeembracing devices 30. I may also secure to the underside of the column or standard suitable handles 31, to facilitate the handling of the device. A support of some nature, as, for instance, a perforated bracket, 32, (may project from one side of the columnor standard) the same carrying an adjustable supporting-rod 33, may be employed, a set-screw 34, being employed to secure the rod in position, whereby the co1- unm or standard may be raised and low ered to any angle and thus supported. A perforated lug 35, may project'from the arm 23 of the nozzle holding clamp, and a chain 36 employed to connect the same with the key 29, whereby the latter will always be at hand for instant use. Vhen not in use, the supporting-rod 33 may have its lower or free end engaged by a clasp 37, whereby it is held parallel and against the side of the column or standard.
It will be seen that the base of the device, as before stated, may be compactly folded after a removal of the turn-table therefrom, and that after the arms or legs 11 are opened and the turn-table placed in position, the arms or legs 11 are locked, so that a virtually rigid base or support is produced.
As in the previous patented construction herein referred to, the fire-hose nozzle is supported by the device herein described in such a manner as to permit of its ready and etlicient manipulation by one man, and this, too, notwithstanding the fact that 'a highpressure water-system is employed.
Having described my invention, what I claim, is:
1. The combination, in a nozzle-holder, of a. base, consisting of a central plate, and arms pivoted to and radiating from the same, said arms being capable of being folded and extended radially in substantially the same plane as the base, and means secured upon the base to engage the arms and lock them in their extended positions.
2. The combination, in a nozzle-holder, of a base, consisting of a central plate provided at intervals with pairs of lugs and back of the same with recesses, and arms pivoted between said pairs of lugs and in rear thereof having extensions taking within the recesses, and means for locking the said extensions within the recesses.
3. The combination, in a nozzle-holder, of a base-plate provided with a central opening having a slot at one side, pairs of lugs radiating from the plate, arms pivoted between the lugs and adapted when extended to lie in substantially the same plane as the plate, a turn-table mounted upon the baseplate and the arms, whereby the latter are locked against folding, a stud depending from the underside of the turn-table and provided at one side with a radial lug, the stud passing within the opening and the 100 lug engaging the underside of the base-plate, and a hose or nozzle supporting-standard carried by the turn-table.
4:. The combination, in a nozzle-holder, of a base-plate provided with a central open 105 ing, arms radiating from and pivoted to the plate and adapted to be extended into the same plane thereof, a turn-table pivotally mounted on the base-plate and upon the arms, whereby the latter are locked in their extended position, means for temporarily securing the turn-table upon the baseplate in a swiveled manner, and a hose or nozzlesupporting standard carried by the turntable.
5. In a nozzle-support, a supportingstandard, combined with the socketed casting located at the upper end thereof and consisting of a standard receiving socket bolted in position and having upwardly disposed hose embracing arms, one of which is notched and perforated, a clamping-arm hinged to one of said hose embracing arms and having its free end reduced and perforated to engage the perforated notch of the companion arm, and a key passed through the perforations.
