Be it known that I, EUGENE FRANK VARACHE, J r., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Liberty, San Juan county, and State of New Mexico, have invented' a new and Improved Adjustable and Foldable .Sawhorse, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a saw horse and has to deal more particularly with a saw horse having adjustable and foldable legs, whereby the range of usefulness of the device is greatly increased.
The invention has for its general objects to improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of the character referred to so as to be reliable and eiicient in use, comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture and of durable and substantial design.
A more specific object of the invention is the provision of a saw horse having longitudinally eXtensible legs whereby the'saw horse can be used on sloping surfaces and staircases, as well as on the level.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel, simple, durable hinge connector for uniting the legs with the bar or body of the saw horse, whereby the legs can be folded into a compact space when the saw horse is not in use.
W ith such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel featuresl of construction and arrangement or parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
ln the accompanying drawing which illustrates one embodiment of the invention, and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a side view of a saw horse set up for use, the legs having intermediate portions broken away; Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the hinge joint that connects the legs with the bar of the saw horse; Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 3 3, Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 4 4, Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is an upper sectional view of the foot portion of a leg.l
Referring to the drawing, A designates the body or bar of the saw horse, and B and B are the legs at each end which are connected with the bar A by hinges C.

Each leg is composed of telescoping pipe sections 1, 2 and. 3, as clearly shown in Figs.
1 and 5, whereby the legs can be lengthened or shortened, according to the shape of the surface on which the saw horse is to stand. A set screw 4 clamps the inner and intermediate sections l and 2 together, and a set screw 5 clamps the outer and intermediate By loosening these set screws the sections of the leg can be slid inwardly or outwardly to shorten or lengthen the leg. When the legs are to rest on surfaces where slipping of the saw horse must be avoided, sharpened spurs 6 are set into the lower ends of the inner sections 1 and are clamped by set screws 7. Ifthe saw horse is to rest on a polished door` or any other surface that must not be marred, they spurs are pushed back into the legs far enough so that their points will not protrude, and when in this position the spurs are clamped by the set screws 7. When the spurs are to be set in protruding position the screws 7 are loosened, and a spring 8 disposed behind each spur will force the same outwardly, and when in the desired position the screws 7 are re-tightened.
l Each hinge C comprises a fixed section c and a movable section c. rlhe section c comprises a plate fastened to the under side of the bar or body A and itis provided with spaced depending lugs 10. The section c of the hinge consists of a plate 11 having a pair of members 12 extending in spaced parallel relation to each other and at rightangles to the plate 11, and the extremities of these members are respectively connected by pivots 13 with the lugs 10 of the fixed section c. The movable section of the hinge is thus an L-shaped structure, and the legs B and B are independently pivoted to the plate 11 by bolts 14, whereby the legs can be moved toward or from each other, as shown by full and dotted lines in Fig. 3.
When the hoi'se is set up for use the legs B and B are spread apart or Hare downwardly and they are held from spreading too far by stops formed by flanges 15 on the lateral edges of the plate l1. rlhese flanges are curved and shaped at their extremities 16 to coperate with the, plate 11 for forming clips, whereby the legs cannot accidentally move inwardly from the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4. When the saw horse is in use the members or ears 12 bear against the xed sections c of the hinge, as shown in Fig. 2, and a suitable catch device is used to prevent the legs at both ends of the saw horse from folding inwardly, such catch device consisting of a spring catch 19 pivotally mounted at 2O on the section c of the hinge, and having a shouldered portion 21 that extends into an opening 22 in the fixed section c of the hinge and there interlocks with the latter. catch device is automatically locked as the legs are swung from the folded 'or dottedline position shown in Fig. 2 to the open or full-line position, but when the legs are to be folded the catch device is manually released so that the legs can be folded to a position parallel with the bar A. When in folded position a hook 23 pivoted on the cross bar 17 of each pair of legs is engaged with an e'ye or equivalent device 24 on the under side of the saw hore bar, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. p
From the foregoing description taken in the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understoodby those skilled in thel art to which the invention appertains, and while I `have described the principle of operation; together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes maybe made when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I`
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A horse comprising a body bar, a plate y fastened to the underside of the bar and having depending lugs, an L-shaped device having one member pivotally connected with the lugs, and said member being adapted to bear` against the plate, legs pivotally mounted on the other member of the device, said plate having an opening, and a springmember of the device to extend into the.
openingof the plate and interlock with the latter for maintaining the legs in operative position, said legs and catch mounted on the same side of the member to which they are attached, and combined stops and yielding clasps on the leg-carrying member for grasping the legs and limiting the spreading movement ofthe latter.
3. A horse comprising a body bar, hinges each including a fixed section on the under side of the body bar and a movable section in the form of a plate having members adapted to bear against the fixed section and pivotally connected to the latter, means for locking the movable sections stationary with respect to the fixed sections, supporting legs pivotally mounted on the movable sections, and resilient anges forming combined clasps and stops on the movable sections for holding the legs in operative position.
