UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TROUSERS APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1914.
Application filed April 17, 1913. Serial No. 761,742.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN V. HAMMACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and trousers appliances and the object of my invention is the provision of a simple, durable and inexpensive device capable of instant insertion in the legs of the trousers, which can be adjusted to stretch and crease the trousers in an efficient and practical manner.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a trousers appliance which will be light in weight, portable and easily packed in a trunk or suit case, which will provide a stretcher and creaser as well as form a convenient and practical hanger for the trousers.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a trousers appliance which can be instantly applied to the legs of the trousers and which will be capable of adjustment to fit any size trousers leg as circumstances require, and which in every particular will perform its functions in a proper manner.
With these objects in View, my invention consists of a trousers appliance embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as shown, described and particularly defined by the claim.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my appliance in closed or collapsed position to permit ready insertion in the leg of the trousers. Fig. 2 represents a similar view in extended position, or with the parts in the position they occupy when stretching and creasing the trousers. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 represent detail views on an enlarged scale to clearly illustrate important features of my invention.
Referring by letter to the drawing: The letter A designates the main supporting or tubular member of my appliance, to the lower end of which is connected the threeway coupling B, and to the horizontal members of which are secured the pair of sleeves C, in which fit adjustably the pair of arms D, and for the purpose of suspending the appliance the sleeves have connected therewith, or a part thereof, the suspending loop E. From this construction it will be noted that the supporting member is disposed centrally and has connected to one end the pair of sleeves in which are mounted the pair of laterally adjustable arms D, and tothe other end of the supporting member is connected the four-way coupling F, in the two horizontal portions of which are rigidly secured the pair of rigid horizontal arms G, which are formed at their ends with guiding slots or kerfs H, in which movably fit the pair of arms or spreaders J, to the outer ends of which at K. and to the ends of the arms D, as at L, are secured the ends of the trousersengaging wires M. To the inner ends of the arms or spreaders J is secured by fastenings N, the adjusting'head O, which fits upon the adjusting screw or rod P, which screw is provided at its exposed end with an adjusting handle Q, and has its threaded portion traveling in the threaded portion R of the four-way coupling and the threaded portion R in the threaded upper end of the tubular supporting member.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawing, the manner of using my appliance will be evident, and it will be understood that a pair of the appliances are used, one for each trousers leg, and that the appliance is inserted in the leg of the trousers and the adjustable arms adapt the lower end to the bottom of the trousers leg, and when thus adjusted the handle on the adjusting screw is turned,
spreading the arms or spreaders and bring-- ing the wires tight against the trousers and effecting the stretching and creasing of the trousers, and when the trousers are suspended the weight of the appliances serves to retain the trousers legs in a smooth and neatly pressed condition, and thus the device performs every function for which it is designed in a thorough and practical manner.
The advantages and features of merit of my appliance will be so obvious and apparentto all skilled in such devices that further comment is deemed unnecessary.
I claim:
A trousers appliance, consisting of a supporting member, a pair of sleeves carried by said member and provided with a suspending loop, a pair of arms adjustably mounted in said sleeves, a pair of rigid arms secured to the sunporting member vand formed with guides, adjustable Spreaders mounted in the member and achustable 1n the guides of the rigid arms, and trousers-engaglng members.
secured to the pair of adjustable arms and to the pair of spreaders said spreaders being adjusted by a :hand-o,perated screw. 10 In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
MARTIN V. HAMlMACK. Witnesses:
FREDERICK L. NELSON, MAY C. BECKWITH.
