Ib all iff/0m it may concern Be it known that I, Moens ALSHL'LER, of lWaukegan, in the county of Lake and State of IllinoisT lvwe invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Housei Dresses: and I hereby declare that thefollowing is a full. clear. and exact description thereof. reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

This invention is a novel improvement in ladies outer garments to be worn in the house, and its object is to provide a neat, simple and attractive house dress or wrapper which can be slipped on or of by the wearer as readily as a coat or bath robe; and which will require but two manipulations to fasten upon the wearer; and when fastened will have the tit and appearance of a neat dress skirt and body with belted waist.

The invention particularly resides in the improvements hereinafter summarized in the claims and will be fully described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view ofthe garment as being put on by a person. Fig. 2 shows the first fastening of the garment. Fig. 3 shows an alternative, first fastening of the garment. Fig. 4 shows the garment fully fastened. F ig. 5 is an enlarged section through the belted portion of the garment. Fig. G is a detail showing the button fastenings.

The garment comprises a waistportion l. skirt portion i2 anda belt portion 3. The waist and skirt portions may be made in one piece or of separate pieces united. The waist portion may have sleeves l of any desired style, and may have the neck finished in any desired style,either high or low neck; a collar 1b being shown in the drawings. The garment opens in front from top to bottom o'f both the waist and skirt portions, and the garment is made with overlapping front portions 1c, 2c, and 1d, 2d.

The belt `3 is preferably7 stitched to the garment at the junction of the waist and skirt portions and extends from the outer edge of one front portion of the garment to the outer edge of the other front portion of the garment so that when the garment is put on and the front portions overlapped; the ends of the belt also overlap at the front of the wearer., in substantially the same Way Specication of Letters Patent.

that the front portions of the garment overlap. The lapping portions 3c, 3d of the belt correspond with the lapping portions l", 2C and ld, 2d respectively of the garment7 so that when the garment is adjusted and the belt vfastened it secures the garment to the wearer and gives a neat close belted appearance to the garment around the waist of the wearer.

Each lapping portion of the belt is provided at its outer end with a suitable fastening device adapted to engage corresponding fastening devices attached to the belt either at the inner or outer side thereof. The fastening devices may be of any suitable kind, but l prefer to use buttons and button holes. Thus as shown the lapping portion 3 of the belt is preferably provided with a button hole 4f which is adapted to be engaged with either a but-ton at attached to the outer side of the belt adjacent the attached edge of the front portion Qd, when the portion lc is lapped over the portion ld; or if portion lc is lapped under the portion 1d the button-hole 4 will be engaged with a button 4b attached to the belt at the inner side of the garment and opposite button 4a. The lapping portion 3d of the belt is also'provided on its outer end with a button-hole 5 which is adapted to be engaged with a button 5 sewed to the outer side of the belt adjacent the attached edge of the front por tion 2c when the front portion 2d is lapped over the portion 2; or to engage a button 5b attached to the belt onthe inside of the garment directly opposite button 5a when the portion 2 is lapped over the portion 2".

l prefer to use buttons for the fasteners but do not wish to be restricted thereto as obviously other suitable fastening devices might be employed. 1Where buttons are used preferably place the inner buttons 41,51) directly opposite the relatedn outer buttons la, 5tl and sew them together to the belt and to each other b v threads passing through the button eyes and through the belt (see Fig. 5): and have suitable machines to sew the buttons in this manner. This insures that whether the fronts of the garment be lapped right or left it will always have the same waist measure. and there is no enlargement of the waist line` or change in length of the beflt whether the fronts are lapped right or le t.

In using the garment the wearer slips it on as a coat (Fig. l) and then laps either front portion over the other (Figs. 2 and 3). As shown in Fig. 2 the parts ld, 2d are to be lapped under the parts 1c, 2"'. In this case the part 3d of the belt is first fastened to the other part of the belt by buttoning it to the button 5b; then the portions l, 2c are lapped over the portions l, 2d and fastened by buttoning the part 3c of the belt to the button 4a (Figs. 4 and 5). The garment is thus simply but securely fastened and presents a symmetrical appearance as shown in Fig. 4. If it is desired to have parts 1d, 2d outermost after slipping on the garment (Fig. l) the part 3 of the belt is closed around the Waist and buttoned to the button 4b (Fig. 3), then the parts 1d, 2d are lapped over the parts lc, 2c and the button-hole 5 engaged with the button 5. In either case however the garment is fastened by simply engaging the two lapping portions of the belt with their fastenings and when so fastened the garment presents the appearance of a neat close fitting garment belted in as indicated in Fig. 4.

It will be readily seen from the drawings that a garment thus constructed can be taken off or put on like a coat and either front portion 1, 2c (or l, 21) can be arranged outermost. When fastened as described the front portions are securely held so that the skirt will not open when the wearer is walking and will be securely held in place. The garment can be used as a house-dress or kimono and if desired can be slipped on over another dress to protect same.

What I claim is: A

1. The herein described womans house dress open in front from top to bottom, and havin opposed front portions adapted to be lap e either overthe other; a belt attached to t -e waist portion of the garment and extending from the enten-edge of one front portion to the outer edge of the other front portion, and having its end portions adapted to be lapped either over the other like the said front portions, a fastening device on each end of each lapping portion of the belt, a pair of fastening devices on the outer and inner sides of the garment attached to the belt adjacent the junction ofI each front portion with the body of the garment; the fastening device on the end of the inner lapped belt portion being adapted toengage the inner fastening device on the opposite outer lapped portion of the belt; and the fastening device `on the end of the outer lapped belt portion being engaged with the outer fastening device on the inner lapped belt portion, substantially as described.

2. The herein described house dress having opposed front portions adapted to be lapped either over the other and provided with button holes near their outer ends adj acent the waist line of the garment, a pair of buttons on the outer and inner sides of the garment attached thereto adjacent the junction of each front portion with the body of the garment by means of threads passing through the garment and engaging the eyes of both buttons; either inner2 lapped front portion being adapted to be buttoned to the inner button on the opposite front portion, and the latter front portion being adapted to be buttoned to the outer button on the inner lapped front portion, substantially as described.
