Be it known that we, JAMES R. CARMER and CHARLES' O. KEAGY, citizens of the United States, residing at l/Vilmington and Philadelphia, respectively, in the counties of New Castle and Philadelphia and States of Delaware and Pennsylvania, respectively, have' invented new and useful Improvements in Railway Card-Holders, of' which the fol'- lowing is a spe'ccation. l

This invention has reference to railway card holders of the general type shown and described in our prior'application', Serial Number 692,973, filed on or about April 24, 1912. i

It comprehends certain hereinafter described improvements in or relating to the Construction and mounting of the holder, whereby the latter, when fastened to the car, will be so disposed asv to provide a gradually increasing space between its top` and bottom edges and the car wall, which efiectually prevents the accumulation of zsnow, ice or water and, also, ot cinders upon the top of the holder and their subsequent entry into the interiory of saidholder. An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing. whereof l Figures 1 and 2 are, respectively, a per" spcctive view and a transverse vertical section of the improved holder, the cover partl or element being shown in Fig. 1 as open, and in Fig. 2 as closed. y l

As shown' in said drawing, the holder con-- sists of two main' elements or parts, namely ;y l a body portion, or body 1, and a cover 2 therefor; Both elements may be of any def sired size and general shape, and are preferably constructed of pressed sheet metal.

The body 1 comprises a flat plarte or base 3 provided at its several marginal edges with continuous, outwardly projecting flanges 4, 5, G and 7the`top flange 4 having a slight upward inclination, as shown in Fig. 2. This element is designed for .at tach'i'nent by mea-ns of screws S,` or th'e' like,

to the particular point on the car 9 pre'- scribed by the Master Car Builders Association, or other governing body.

The companion element, z'. c., the cover 2, comprises, in like manner, a plate 10 having marginal flanges 11, 12, 13 and 14, which project inwardly for coperation with the corresponding body flanges to prevent the entrance of water, snow and cinders into the interior ofthe holder when the cover is closed. The,width of the top flange 11 is approximately half that of' theside and bot- y tom flanges 12, 13 and 14. The elements 1 and 2 are pivotally connected at their upper ends by means of pins 15, or the like, which pass through registering openings in the si'delflanges 5 and 12, and G and 13, and thus permitthe cover to be swung upwardly into open position, this upward movement being `termina-ted by the contact `of the narrow cover flange 11 with the inclined body flange 5 4, as shown in Fig'.A 1.

As originally stated, it is the purpose of our invention to so dispose the holder that, when attachedv to the car wall, a space will be left or produced between the latter and the base plate 3' which gradually increases from its upperv to its `lower end. This result* is obtained, preferably, by providing the aforementioned plate 3 with two series of rearwardly-extending lugs, bosses or like projections or feetfld and 17, the upper feet 16 being somewhat shorter than the lower feet 17, so ,that when these feet are in con- L tact with the car wall, the lower portion of Aitlie holder will be disposed a greater disita'nc'e away from saidV wall than the upper i portion thereolf', the holder then occupying f the position represented in Fig. 1. Certain `of the feet areformed with central apertures 18y through which the screws or other lfasteners 8 are passed, the heads of said fastenersy being received'lin the cavities or i seats producedby the formation of the feet. TheV two main parts orV elements of the holder lare normally locked' together `by means ofa latch device which is here shown las of th-e snap type and as comprising` a y,rib-,like male member 19 provided on a `yield'i'ng or resilient tongue 2,0 that forms a ipo'rtion of thel'bottoin body flange 7, and an elongated groovelike female member 21 provided upon the bottom cover flange 14. The 'ton'gue 20 `s produced byv forming a E'pair of transverse slits in said' flange 7, and "then crimping or corrugating the portion between the slits to form the rib 19, while the socket 21 is stamped or pressed out from the flange 14, the parts 19 and 21 being so proportioned that the former will snap into the latter when the cover is closed. To open the holder, a finger piece or handle erably located upon the flange 14 and produced by slitting that flange and bending the portion thereof between the slits laterally outward.

The cards, (not shown), are retained within the body of the holder by suitable devices which may advantageously consist of barbs 23, or the like, upon which vthe cards are impaled. A pair of these iinpaling devices are depicted in Figs. l and 2, as stamped from the plate 3 and bent outward into approximately horizontal position, their free ends projecting, when the cover is closed, into recesses 24 which are produced by indenting said cover at the proper points.

In the appended claims, reference is made to the back and the top member of the holder. rlhe back of the holder is obviously theplate 3 of the body element, while the top is constituted, in effect, by the flange 4 on that element, the top flange 11 of the cover element having a width which is much less than that of the flange 4, as previously stated. Also, since the flange 4 is inclined upwardly and forwardly, it will constitute a chute which discharges any water, snow or cinders which may fall thereon into the upper portion of the space between the holder back and the car wall.

The invention, its manner of use, and its advantages are believed to be apparent from the foregoing, and further description therelof is accordingly omitted.

What is claimed is l. A railway card holder for attachment to cai' walls having its back provided adj acent the top and bottom edges thereof with rearwardly-projecting feet adapted to contact with the carwall, to dispose said back away from said car wall when the holder is attached thereto, the lower feet having a greater length than the upper feet, whereby the distance between the lower portion of the holder back and the car wall is greater than that between the upper portionjof said back and said car wall.y

2. A railway card holder for attachment to car walls comprising pivotally-connected body and cover elements, the back of said body element having its inner face indented adjacent the upper and lower edges thereof, to form rearwardly-projecting feet adapted to contact with the car wall, to dispose said back away from said car wall when the holder is attached thereto, the` lower feet having a greater length than the upper feet, whereby the distance between the lower portion of theholder back and the car wall is greater than that between the upper portion greater than that between the upper portion..

4. A railway card holder for attachment to car walls having its back provided with upper and lower rearwardly projecting feet adapted to contact against the car wall, to dispose said back away from the car wall when the holder is attached thereto, the lower feet having a greater length than the upper feet, whereby the space between the lower portion of said back and the car wall is greater than that between the upper portion of said back and said car wall, the top member of said holder being inclined upwardly and forwardly, to discharge water, snow and cinders falling thereon into the space between said back and car wall.

5. A railway card holder for attachment to car walls having its back provided with upperand lower rearwardy projecting feet adapted to contact'against the car wall, to

`dispose said back away from the car wall when the holder is attached thereto, the top member of said holder beinginclined upwardly and forwardly, to discharge water,

snow and cinders falling thereon into the space betweensaid back and car wall.'
