' woman's orm'i nm naawnns Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed March 2s, 1913. Serial No. 757,458.
Patented July '7, 1914.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTHA M. PRIN- DALL, a citizen of the United States, resident of Lynn, in the county of .Essex and State of Massachusetts, have made a certain newand useful Invention in Womens Curtam-Drawers; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains' to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of the invention is to provide drawers suitable for the protection of expensive skirts in womens dress, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank or attern for the drawers; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the drawers spread out inflflat position, and Fig. 3 is a central vertical section of the drawers;
The pattern is in very simple form, where.- by the entire pair of. drawers, exceptthe facings, are designed to be cut in one piece.' In this pattern the leg portions, indicated in the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention by thenumeral 2, extend in opposite directions in the flap from the middle or body portion 3, which is provided with a front U-shaped bay or cut-out 4 for the waist, and with a rear flap orcurtain 5 be tween rear bays or recesses 6, these rear recesses being opposite the fronts orplacket edges of the drawers, indicated at 7.v The placket edges are in line with each other and at right angles, substantially, to the end portions of the waist bay. The 'waist bay is entirely out out of the upper or front portion of the pattern and its ends form an angular junction. with the ends of the placket edges 7 which are in linewith each other and form ortions of the upper edge of the pattern.- he rear or lower edgeof the patternis so out? that the curtain por- Y ,tion 5, is substantially below the rear seam edges of the leg ortions'. The curtain is therefore not. con ned by junction with the waist bay, but hangs freely from the ends of the leg seams.
In cutting the goods the outer or free edge 8 of the flap shouldbe taken on the selvage, a selva'ge edge being much preferable along this part, not only to facilitate laundrying, but also to avoid inconvenience in the use of the garment, which would be apt to arise from a hemmed edge in this position.
In making the garment the waist recess or bay 4 is provided with the usual reinforcement, a band as at 9, and the recesses or cut-outs 6, adjoining the ends of the curtain edge are also reinforced, as indicated at 10. The front edges 7 are also reinforced. The front and rear edges 12 of each leg are stitched together in a suitable manner to form leg seams, and such lace or other ornamental trimming may be applied as the taste of the wearer may indicate.
The drawers are easily laundried, being doubled flat lengthwise, and have a continuous rectilinear fold extending from end to end of the leg portions through the middle portion, whichis integral or solid, the waist bay being entirely in front of this line. The curtain and plackets, being connected to the leg seams, there is a tendency to draw the lower portionof the curtain inward, and in this way to aid the purposes of the article;
When the drawers are longitudinally folded, the plackets are parallel to the line of the fold. In the use of these drawers, the edges of the cut-outs or recesses 6, being most subject to wear, are strengthened by reinforcing asindicateda The free curtain portion is designed to fallorhang in rear being somewhat drawn forward or inward below, in such wise as to protect the skirt or other garment behind'it from being stained, es-
pecially in sitting down, through the unexected appearance of the menses. A. pair of rawers of this kind may also be made in several pieces, but by making the article of one piece the extra goods provided for in the curtain portion is so disposed as to avoid the inconvenience of unnecessary seams and folds. v What Iclaim is:
\ A pair of drawers, including a solid middle portion and oppositely extending leg ortions, and having a continuous rectilinear old of said middle portion and leg portions, a waiit bay entirely in front of said fold, and having its ends substantially at In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, I
